We are thinking of changing our car, obviously will need another 4x4 to pull our twin axle Sterling. Any recommendations? our current car (Shogun 3.2 diesel) does the towing job very well, but is heavy on fuel and expensive to repair. Looking for a fairly newish secondhand.
If you are buying new have a look at the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento. Not really proper 4x4's but delivering over 45mpg and weighing almost 2 tonne makes them very good tow cars that you can live with.
If you can stretch to a new shape kia sorento they come with a 7 year warranty so should cost almost nothing to repair. All large heavy 4x4 cost more to fuel than normal cars but they make you feel safe and tow your van with ease. XC90 is at the end of its life and is being sold at good discounts currently. It may look cheap but the engines are older design and less efficient than the more modern offerings from other marques which hits fuel consumption and road tax costs. For new or nearly new motors I feel 'money no object' the choice is range rover or discovery 4. For 'value for money' kia sorento or Hyundai santa fe. Range rover budget for new starts at around £80-£90k. Hyundai/kia budget for a new one at £25-£35k. I have to buy my own car so I choose the cheap Korean model. Rubbish badge, great cars designed for normal people. And remember - the less you spend on driving, the more you can spend on camping!!!
------------- Why am i doing this instead of camping??!!
Stick your requirements in the Auto trader site, look nationally, even if you really don't want to travel so far for one. You will get a feel for whats out there and the price. Open a new tab on the the tow match site and toggle between the two with the details of vehicles you are looking at.
You will loose the will to live after a while.
I may change back to a Sorento next year..
------------- Just saying
If all is not lost where is it then?
Thanks both. Have checked all the likely 3.2 Shoguns (so far) on Autotrader. What sort of Hyundai? It looks as if the Santa Fe or Kia Sorento wouldn't be up to the job, unless I am missing something.. Our caravan has an MIRO of 1644kg and MTPLM of 1804kg.
