How about a Honda Civic -very reliable cars, diesels are pretty economical and torquey. I owned an 02 Civic CDTI for 4 years, very reliable, roomy and quick, averaged minimum 50mpg.
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
They would be fine for towing but I would strongly advise you not to buy the focus, I had one and it was nothing but problematic, we now have an astra and it is a lot better car in my opinion.
Edit: You could also look at a vw golf, audi A3 or seat leon they are all the same thing underneath but are good reliable cars even if a little more expensive than other cars of the same age.
Another vote for the civic,
I have a 1.6 sport auto , loads of room, nippy, economical and really comfortable on long journeys,
I don't tow with it though but believe the max towing capacity is 500kgs un braked
------------- Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
Due to not being able to easily find out if the Focus un braked towing weight even Ford could not give me a response apart from giving me their engineers hotline to be used by their engineers and Ford dealers not knowing, we have removed this off our list.
Tried out a Honda Civic for size, and have put this on our list of possible cars, which are as below, our budget being a maximum of £2,500, so are looking at 2003 to 2004 cars with a maximum of 80,000 miles.
Would welcome comments on the cars below with regards to towing viability, mpg, overall ownership experience.
Thanks.

I owned the Civic it wasan 02 model, but the 1.7cdti. I did not tow with it but it was very torquey and had good all round performance with economy.
The Honda petrol engines are very good but do not deliver the low down torque of a diesel.
They are very roomy and comfortable, with good standard kit(air con was very effective!).
I had to have a new battery on mine, which was replaced under warranty-the car was about 18 monthhs old at the time. Other than that faultless.
at 664DaveS Many thanks for your response. Unfortunately as we will only be covering max of 5,000 miles in this vehicle, I don't think the extra cost of a diesel car would be warranted. Do the diesels have DPF's fitted?
at anyone - Does anyone have experiences of the Astra's

Just check the engine power before you buy an Astra. My sister nearly bought one but when i checked the details for her it has less than 70bhp.
Useless for towing.
I know what you mean re Astra engines, we are looking at 1.6 16v 100bhp auto or a 1.6 8v 85bph manual.
Just to put another car ( or engine) in your mind! I have a skoda with the amazing and very strong 1.9tdi engine.
This engine is great for towing and is available in VWs in the golf or audi A3 or skoda Octavia to name just 3!!
All the cars I mentioned can be had for £ 2500 or less and all of them are much better than an Astra !!

I already drive a Skoda with the 1.9 TDI engine and had a VW one before that so are aware of how great they are for towing. However, our current 2nd car is 2000 reg with 91,000 miles and with our budget and mileage requirements all we could get is a 2001 possibly 2002 car and having to pay circa £2,000 for a year newer car may be would not be the best option.
Also our 2nd car would only cover max 5,000 miles a year, so not sure a diesel would be that cost effective.
Just the job, and with loads of boot space, and a 650kg tow

My brother used to tow a camping trailer with a 1.6 golf petrol, he had no problems at all but needed more space so changed it for a passat!
I've been looking on auto trader and you can pick up a 2004 golf for £2500.
I made the mistake of going from a old high mileage but very reliable VW to a much newer Renault ........ I still have nightmares about that car lol
If you can find a car that suits you from the VAG group I'm sure you won't go wrong.
Just a thought, a guy I work with tows a TT with his Seat Leon, I'll ask him if he has had any probs, that's a 1.6 petrol !!
Cheers .
Skipp66 the golf has a very small boot, the Octavia is the best all rounder especially the diesels, with a 650KG UB tow, and a massive boot space, the Octavia is a golf but slightly longer, and cheaper to insure for some reason
