Hi, great website, got loads on my virtual brochure.

Question:

Can a 2l tdci 56plate mondeo tow a Sterling Onyx90elite?

I'm thinking only just so long as we don't put much in the 'van

the mondeo has a kerb of 1500

the 'van is 1600

if I add 200 for me and missus

this is 3300, 200 below the 3500 limit. This gives us a couple of hundred for her clothes!!

Am I right??

Try using one of thh online tow match websites to give you a better idea, l have used www whattowcar.com several times and have had excellent information from them which has proved to be fairly true with the outfits we have owned.

On the face of it, your caravan is rather heavy for the kerbweight of the mondeo, ideally, you need a caravan fully laden weight to be no more than 85% of the kerbweight of the car. If stoped by the Police, they may consider the match unroadworthy, and prevent you from continuing your journey until a more suitable tow is sourced.

I have answered in your other thread

Licences work on plated weights not actual weights so the B licence limit is a total of 3500 of the plated weights

I take it you must be new to caravanning or you would not be asking this question.
Putting to one side the debate about what you are a legally allowed to tow I would not contemplate towing a caravan which weighed more than the towcar for safety reasons.

There will no doubt be some folks who say you can but in my 30+years of towing I would not consider it myself having seen some of the unfortunate results of others doing so.

2100kg for the cars gross weight + 1600kg for the caravan is NOT less than 3500kg.

Even if the cars 2000kg your still 100kg over.

And your probably over the cars gross train weight also.

Then the have the issue of the caravan weighing more than the car. So the caravan will dictate your direction of travel.

Totally unsuitable.

The Mondeo's max tow is with an unladen car.
Gross car weight + max towing weight exceeds the cars gross train weight.

I towed a 1450 kg Hymer with a 55plate tdci mondeo and it did a superb job. Would I consider towing a 1600kg caravan with the same car, not a cat in h***s chance.

In addition, the 3500 kg that a b licence holder is allowed is the sum of the max plated weights of each vehicle, the mondeo has a maximum allowable gross weight from the plate of 2026kg meaning that thr macimum legally allowable plated weight for the trailer cam be no more than 1475kg.

Bill

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Why?    cars gross laden weight = 2100kg on mine anyway.
Manufacturers max tow is 1800kg.

But the Gross train weight is 3720kg.

So with an old licence you can load the car lightly and tow 1800kg even though the kerbweight maybe 1500kg or less for a petrol model.
Or load the car all the was to 2100kg and tow less.

My sisters Mondeo hatch had a gross train weight of 3490kg. Mines the estate with higher figures for gross laden and train weights.

I think Renaults are the same?   Max tow is with an unladen car?

You got it wrong again grampian, with a post 1997 licence the restriction of the caravans gross laden weight being less than the cars kerbweight was removed a year ago. I know you insist on keeping it on your posts but by the same token I reserve the right to correct it every time I see it.

Are you on auto repeat? You said that yesterday. Its my signature i dont post it every day.

You tell me its wrong then provide a link to the GOV webpage that mentions it.

So the OP is OK to tow the above mentioned outfit? No they are not. end of.. The signature stays.

Yeah. Its not safe to say max tow - gross weight = your limit.

Probably right 99% of the time. But a few exceptions.

Also seems to be varied gross train weights on the Mondeo's.

Seen about 5 or 6 different gross weights and train weights mentioned for MK3 Mondeo's.

As i said in my message each time you post the incorrect information I will correct it. So again as of january 2013 it has not been a requirement of the law for a person holding a b licence that the trailer has a max plated weight that is less than the cars unladen weight.

As to suggesting the Op is ok to drive that combination, i do not think I could have been less specific that it would be wrong in all circumstances for him to do so.

Gross train weights can vary infinitely between limits. Max tgross weight is plated on the car, the higher the max gross plated on the car the lower the max plated weight that the trailer may have. For a diesel mondeo mk3 the minimum that the maximum gross weights that is plated on any of the models is on the 115bhp hatchback and the figure on that plate is 2025kg giving an absolute maximum plated trailer weight for a person with a b licence of 1475kg. For the estate the figure for the car is higher so the figure for the trailer is lower.

I tow 1460kg with my mondeo. It's right up there at the upper limit. I'd be happy towing 1600KG if it was within the law but it's not so end of.
