I have never thought to even try any other way than past fylingsdale, it is an easy tow both ways.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

hi loulee i have looked on a few route finders and they all say go the a64 even the on caravan club tinernet .ps were are you going in whitby
we are off to broadlands farm....15 a night and it's fully equipped and walking distance.
I don't know if to do the Scarborough whitby road...A171 as some one has posted saying they always go that why
No problems there but using the A64 and then the a169 is easier, long sweeping curves and long hills up and down instead of the windy road between Scarborough and Whitby.

Hi i have always gone over flying dales with vectra 2.0ltr diesel, towing 1200kg,never had any problems.
If you are not confident i would detour around for peace of mind.
Tommy.

did the fylingdales route once in a renault 16 towing a globetrotter seemed ok at he time but I was naive and young at the time and oblivious of weights and hill i think there is a one in six on the road somewhere these days i come feom the north because I live to the north but that still requires a steep climb just beyond Guisborough
My second time towing was to Whitby from York. I went a64 then a169 route. No probs with 1.9 vectra (150bhp) estate towing van that is 1300kg max laden going. The hill down through sleights is pretty steep and there is a sharp bend about half way on the a169 (hocum?) that would be uphill on way back too. I came back via Scarborough! Though I think I would give it a go now.
Good advice by ANDY,if you decide to go via the A169 i would go back A171.When at Whitby last year i was driving solo on a trip to Heartbeat location at Goathland, through Sleights, uphill behind a caravan and he did not make it, boiling up.Also as said there is a very sharp left hand uphill hairpin bend at Hole of Horcum.
If you are worried you'll be fine a64 a169 going and then come back via Scarborough. There is nothing to get at all concerned about on the a64. No need at all to go further north on the a1 to use a171.
Ps: Also you need beware of the a170 from thirsk to the coast as caravans are forbidden to go up Sutton bank.

thanks....I'm not worried at all regards the A64.....it's the other two....the Pickering to Whitby road....then the Scarborough to Whitby road....people have posted to go the Scarborough way or some have said go Pickering to Whitby road then coming home go on Whitby Scarborough road to avoid Blue bank at Sleights...
I'm a nervous wreck and it's suppose to be a holiday
Go along the pickering Whitby road everything else does. It is a very good road and poses no problems at all for an outfit like yours.
