has anyone done a towing course? I am thinking of signing up to the Caravan Club towing course as I have never towed, hitched up or unhitched a caravan. are they worth the money and/or are there any other course anyone can recommend? Many thanks

We recently went on Caravan Club course, thanks to winning a review prize on here.
Our experience was for years with a trailer tent but never with a caravan. Our course was the shorter one for those with some experience, which we found very useful.
I am assuming the longer course for absolute beginners will be as useful.
Perhaps a bit pricey if you are funding for 2 people out of your own pocket.

Did you do the course with a trailer tent, I am fine going forward but still find it difficult to reverse especially when having to change direction. So have thought of doing a course but not sure if they are suitable fro trailer tenters.
I did a two day caravan club one. It was really helpful. Covered legal stuff about towing, weights etc. lots of practical stuff. Really useful and increased my confidence prior to towing.
My wife and I did the 2 day Caravan Club course and it was worth every penny, despite having caravanned for many years. Yes there are plenty of videos online but there is nothing like doing it for real in your own towcar.

We did the course with a caravan.
Trailer tents have such a short base that reversing them is the quickest way of joining a lunatic asylum.
We always unhitched and spun the trailer around. (The Holtkamper is very light unlike some of the Penine tanks)

Thanks SGThomas.
I know what you mean about reversing trailer tenets by the time you can see any movement of the trailer in the mirrors the trailer has gone to far. Nearly joined the lunatic asylum when I missed a campsite entrance and when I tried to reverse it down our slopping driveway where the pavement slopes up so the trailer disappears for a while. We now drive the car into the garage and then un hook the trailer tent and push to the side of the house. Far better than either trying to reverse the trailer tent or unhitching and having to push it down the driveway and manually.
For years I towed a camping trailer then folding camper and as already mentioned reversing with such a short distance between hitch and axle was a complete nightmare. Likwise I either unhitched and spun it round or simply avoided getting into a reverse situation in the first place so when we had the van I decided to go on a course and do it properly.
I only did the single day one as I had previous experience on hitching up etc. It was totally worth the money for me, we has great tuition and bags of time to practice and ask questions. Once you understand the basics it gives you the confidence to have a go and it gets easier each time, go for it, you will be glad you did.
