Hi this is my first post and any help would be fantastic.
I have a Honda Civic 5 door Max 1400 2002.
I have tried to find what 2 berth caravan I can tow.
I do not have the manual.
The problem I am finding is ,3 or 5 door Civic 2002 models.
There is a vast difference in towing weights.
I would love to be able to tow with the Honda but finding it near impossible to try and find the correct info.
Kind regards
Gary

On here it gives 1200kg braked tow weight which sounds about right but obviously you have to hope info is correct so handy if you could verify it from manual if you can find one.

1400petrol, not much torque for towing so go for lightweight 2 berth say well under a tonne all up for reasonable road performance.

Have a look at the freedom range of lightweight caravans, they have been making them for years and generally come up on ebay, preloved, gumtree etc and are very lightweight, we had one as a starter and pulled it with a 1.3 soft top jeep and 1.3 wagon r.
I have an 02 civic sport 3door 1.6 auto and I think it's about 1000kgs,towing capacity (but don't tow with it) the freedoms come in well under that.
The only problem we used to have with a small engine is hills tend to slow you down a lot

1400cc 88 BHP. Pulling away on a hill may be a clutch burning exercise.

The max tow maybe 1200kg. But i bet the car weighs less than that.

85% will be around 950kg. So you want a caravan with a gross laden weight of less than 950kg.

We used to tow a borrowed Comanche Montana trailer tent with our 53plate Honda Jazz which had the same 1.4 engine as the Civic 1.4 of the same era, fully laden we were towing around 700kg, and it was fine on the flat and could keep up a fairly good pace. Motorway inclines and steep hills were another matter, and we could find ourselves chugging along in 3rd gear at 30mph for several miles on some motorways, and l will never forget the time when we took a wrong turning and ended up towing up Porlock Hill in Sommerset, 1st gear all the way for about a mile with the stench of burning clutch all the way.

Add to this the fact that your Civic is heavier than the Jazz, the Caravan will have a stronger wind resistance than a trailer-tent has, and as stated above, your choice of caravan is going to be limited to the lighter weight models of the Microlight range of caravans.

In 2002, Honda also produced a 1.6 Civic 5 door, maybe this is where the confusion between your cars towing limits comes from, as indeed it was a tow match for quite a few small lightweight 2 berth vans of the same period, the Avondale Perle range, Lunar Zenith, Elddis Wisp to name a few.
The manfacturers maximum tow limits are what a cars capabilities are under test conditions to pull off a given weight from standstill, on a certain ( fairly low) gradient of hill, and keep going for a given distance. It is in no way a true indication of how well a car will behave as a towcar, when faced with the everyday variations and conditions whilst towing that a driver will find himself in whist out on the road.

For further information on Outfit matching of a particular Car and Caravan, visit www.whattowcar.com, it will give you a fairly good guide as to what is a fairly decent match and what is to be avoided, both by using a star rating, and further written reports from owners and experts alike.
The Caravan Club also offer a similar service, but you may have to be a member to use it.

Thank you all for the advice. Sadly I do not have the manual so finding the info is difficult.
I have contacted my local Honda dealer and they had no idea about towing weights for my car.

Any help about what caravan within the weights to look at would be a great help to someone who is very new.
Sorry for so many questions.

I have seen this van on ebay but it gives no weights.

Parkers for the car, click the link in my first post. The caravan I can tell the approx weight just by looking, I am familar with them. As pointed out, with 1.4 petrol you really want to keep caravan as light as poss. The Sprite would do the job & the seller claims it is dry but take a damp meter, damp in those is not unknown as with any caravan that age.

Take a look at the smaller Abbey Piper and ABI Monza caravans if your looking for an older lightweight caravan, my very first Caravan was a Monza 360, Towed by a 1983, 1345cc Honda Civic, plenty of fun and games and 3rd gear 30mph chuggs on the Motorway, but we did get there in the end, and kept going for 2 seasons before trading up for a Honda Accord 1.6.

For you, the smaller and lighter the caravan the better, you also have to take into consideration the wind resistance from a full width and height caravan combined with a rather under-engined towcar. For this reason, IMHO, l would be looking towards something narrower and lower, the Freedom microlights, Fleurette Pop-tops, and various 'Folding Caravans' that would be a much better tow-match for your car. I certainly wouldnt go for a caravan with a maximum gross laden weight over 750kg, if your expecting a safe and comfortable tow.

Just a thought but have you had a good look around your cars door cills, usually the drivers door or centre upright, or even under the bonnet for anykind of Weight plate/car chassis/engine information?

Im now on my 9th Honda, and they have all had one somewhere, as have most makes of car

The logbook (V5C) may have the figures you need. But the max tow being 1200kg doesnt help when the cars kerbweight is a little over 1100kg.

If it turns out that the max tow is 1200 kgs, i would suggest that you take the car to a weigh bridge and weigh it, it should be empty with 90% fuel whatever figure it weighs in at add 75kg for driver this will give you your true kerbweight

Whatever this true kerbweight is you should aim for a caravan that has a max loading weight of around 85% of the car kerbweight this is advised for novice towers but not law you can tow upto 100% of your vans weight, so if car comes in a 1000 kgs you should look at vans around 850 kgs max.

Again thank you for all your advice. I work where they have a weigh bridge so will be asking tomorrow

The idea of taking a damp meter is a very good idea , can anyone suggest a model for me please.
