Have you got a caravan with unladen weight of 1720kg if so what do you tow with.
We are planning on changing our car Hyundai terracan but are finding that we are quite restricted on what can tow this weight other than another 4x4 .
If we don't have a 4x4 it has got to be an estate car due to needing dog and double pushchairs space.

I have looked at quite a few different makes of cars and there towing capability's but still haven't found one suitable.

The simple answer is there isn't an estate car on large saloon heavy enough to tow that weight. You already have one of the best towing vehicles for the weight of your caravan. You would require a vehicle weighing 2 tonnes kerbweight to give you the power and stability up front. The room in the back of any 4X4 would take your double pushchairs and your dog. There is no other way....

Shogun 3.2 DiD LWB.

Our caravan is only 1300kgs loaded though.

But.... It gives us the option of upgrading to 'nearly' anything in the future....

Not knowing what your budget may be it is difficult to suggest a suitable towcar for you. However, apart from the usual 4x4 options, there are a number of MB vehicles that may meet your requirements; the 'R' series for example.

Presumably the laden weight is over 1900kg so I would say pretty much any non large 4x4 is going to be ideally too light

As mentioned the 300C touring may be 2t + kerbweight but none of the German exec saloons or estate version will be over that as they are pretty lightweight for their size these days due to trying to keep emissions down

You will also need to consider noseweight as with maybe 1900kg + you are ideally looking at least at 95kg noseweight, and no non-4x4 have over 100kg noseweight ability (I've looked for our own use as wanted to carry bikes on tow bar as well!)

OK looking at the van Op has in signature I think 1720 may be max weight - not unladen weight in which case some of the larger saloons and MPV like S Max may cope with it, especially if loading van lightly maybe

If the OP has young children I wonder if they have a post 1997 licence which would mean restrictions on vehicle choice unless they take the extra test.

Plus I could never pack lightly with my kids!!!! I would be looking for big 4x4 personally.

Our Smax replaced a Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Smax is far bigger inside than the Jeep was and tows just as well (as long as you are not doing a peppa pig impression on muddy fields).

So I suppose it is not necesserily the case that a big 4x4 will hold more clutter than a large MPV

Sticking with Hyundai, you could also consider the Santa Fe as well as the i800. Don't know your budget but I would seriously shortlisting MY2010-2012 with 2.2R engine and in 7str mode (comes with self levelling suspension) and manual (compared to auto, manual enables extra 20kg noseweight to 100kg and extra 500kg braked tow weight to 2,500kg).

My twin axle is 1459kg MIRO and 1753kg MTPLM and was previously towed admirably by my 2006 Sorento (2250kg kerbweight - similar to Terracan I guess?). Before I bought my MY2012 Santa Fe I was that it may not tow as well as the Sorrie, but with a little care regarding noseweight (use a new Milenco premium gauge to check, and spread load weights a bit more carefully all along the van floor)the Santa Fe eclipses (in nearly all areas except no low range 'box but I can live with that with a mover) the perfectably acceptable KIA. Kerbweight of the Santa Fe is 2,000kg and this is ballasted (oops!) by SWMBO and three teenagers and Cadac, roof box, clothing etc. So I guess the real tow ratio is nearer 70% in my case, and well within the 5,070kg gross train weight. Surprisingly, more useable space (for occupants and stuff) than cavernous Sorento, but the 311lb ft torque 2.2R engine and 6 well spaced 6 speed manual box, means that the Santa Fe is the much better tower on main routes. I tow to France and I have found that I can comfortably tow at 56-65mph on Autoroutes compared with 50-60mph with the Sorento. 6th is usable most the way along the M4 from Folkestone towards Bristol, and I get typically 22mpg compared with 20mpg for the Sorrie "fully loaded". I am well pleased. It's never a Touareg, Q7 or Disco 3-4 but at around half the price its a very sensible choice and capable all round family vehicle.

Hope this helps as I appreciate it can be daunting when changing tow vehicles as the car makers' objective (unless money no object)is to reduce kerbweights in the quest for lower emissions coupled with the fact that dealer demonstrators never (in my experience)come with a tow bar for a true test!!

I'd also consider the new Ssang Yong 4x4 if that rocks your boat. More traditional jeep 4x4 but I gather pretty capable and excellent VFM if c.£20k your budget and want new(??).

Many members on this Site rate and own the 2010-2012 Santa Fe - I trust their experiences largely echo my very favourable experiences :->

Good luck in your choice of replacement vehicle!
J
