Hi all,
Our van comes in at 1595kgs mtplm I'mtoying with the idea of a Mondeo estate 2.0 diesel from 2010 onwards manual.trying to find weights for these cars, I'm getting conflicting figures do you think the van is too heavy for this car?

The v5 on my 2012 mondeo hatch says the miro is 1675kg the estate will be more. It tows my 1450kg hymer like a dream. An estate will be heavier so you would be looking at 93% match which in itself with a towcar as good as the Mondeo is no problem. I used to tow the hymer with a mk3 hatch that had a miro of 1496kg and I can honestly say that in 8 years that combination never gave me one moment of instability.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Thanks for that, just trying to steer clear of another 4x4, I know they do a 2.0 140 hp, but would the 163 be better?

Not a lot of difference in torque between the 140 and 163. If you find the 140 short of power for towing you are going too fast.

Bit of a silly statement Bill (I presume yours is the 140 model....)and one which makes no sense.
You don`t have power necessarily to go `fast`, but to be able to get out of a situation (probably not of your making) faster and with a greater safety margin. You could probably get your outfit to your cruising speed with less than half the power you have in your car, so using your criteria you must also going be going `too fast`.
You are in effect saying that everyone with more than 140bhp that tows a caravan must be going "too fast".
Fortunately, there are people with commonsense and restraint out there.

Personally its way too heavy for a Mondeo.
You want something with an unladen kerbweight exceeding 1800kg.
Engine power wont be the issue. The tail wagging the dog is what you need to avoid.

You are quite correct, the comment was a bit tongue in cheek to try to put the point that the 140 has so much grunt available where you need it that the 163 is overkill. My last Mondeo was the 115 bhp mk3 and that had power and torque enough to spare.

I can sympathise with your view but the simple fact is that the Mondeo is such a stable platform that it will cope with that sort of weight superbly. It gives a 93% match and towing at that ratio is very stable.

My 2011 Mondeo weighs in at 1705kg on a weight bridge estate is 20kgs heavier than hatch, however mine is a Titanium x so all the toys add the extra weight,
I was going to get the 160 bhp version however i was told that the140 bhp is better balanced for towing, something to do with torque settings ??

I have a new 163 estate and yes it tows like a dream and is quick solo but towing I cannot tell any difference between this and my last accord 140 estate.
I get the feel that the gearing is higher to reduce emissions.

I have a '63 estate, business version, 140bhp and it tows my caravan like a dream. Sometimes have to remember to keep to 60mph on motorways. Would recommend it as a tow car every time, depending on size of caravan of course.

High 30's if your careful not to let the speed increase.
I managed 39mpg with my MK3 Mondeo 130bhp diesel.

My 12 plate mondeo 140 is mot a patch for economy on my old 115 mk3. i seem to be getting about 46mph in mixed driving about 58 on a long trip and about 28 towing. But I have very light feet, it would be very easy to increase that fuel usage if I was a bit more enthusiastic with my right foot.
