Hello everyone
Ive just purchased a very tidy 2006 mondeo St tdci estate fully loaded and will pull a house down! BUT! I CANT find the tow bar I want!nive asked plenty of suppliers and fitters but cant get a straight answer or even a reply sometimes! Been on different ford forums and still waiting for a reply :(
What I want is a tow bar and electrics that are hidden when not in use, I also dont want any visible cuts in my bumper! I've just joined ST owners club and will be attending shows/meets and dont want a lump of metal out the back if I can help it :)
I know there are plenty of bars out there that only have cuts underneath but then when its detached you can still see the housing, like witter for example as its a horizontal bar not vertical..
so, please please please..is there anyone out there with the same model car as me 2006 st tdci estate that has the same set-up I want and can tell me what make/model oor where you had it done as I live in walsall, west mids and willing to travel if necessary to get what I want..
I seem to recall some discussions about the ST models not being type approved for fitting a towbar... hope that's not the case for you, but may be worth checking direct with Ford?
It's only the petrol ST that's not type approved!
The tdci version is approved and a very good tow car..
There are plenty of tow bars out there for the st tdci I just want a bar that is hidden when not on use ;)
That's why I'm looking for a vertical detachable grampian as it clicks upwards into the housing! and not a horizontal which you are talking about, and electrics that flip down like on many tow bars now :) they as you say all come with underside cut to allow for fitting to chassis..i can get a vertical but the manufacturer/fitter of that particular bar stated a visible cut to the bumper which is not going to happen..my bumper isn't that low to be honest.i can get a witter which is a horizontal bar but that's a last resort if I can't find a vertical detachable :) I've read that a guy had a westfalia fitted to his 2007 model st tdci estate and is invisible when not in use but can't get hold of him or find who did it,I've contacted someone who deals with westfalia and they can't guarantee that it will fit without a visible cut :(
Macquatic
It took me the same amount of time to find it before I came here ;)
That's the bar I asked a well known supplier to supply but he could not 100% guarantee it would fit without a cut as the st bumper may be different and I have self levelling suspension? 1 of those listed says side bumper cut! My bumper looks like the zetec s and awaiting a reply about the westfalia..Im asking on here as its a good chance a fellow camper/caravaner will have the set up I need and info I need to be 100% sure ;)
I know this is a "long shot" but I have a Mazda 6 with their own make of vertical detachable tow bar fitted. Once detached, you can't see the holding bracket and the electrics push up behind the bumper. Nobody knows their is a bracket fitted. Is the floor pan of the Mazda not the same as a Mondeo? It may be worth calling into Mazda so one of their mechanics can have a look for you. Best of luck.
Thanks Spanish
I think the problem I have is its a sports model on a facelift year with self levelling suspension..waiting for a reply about westfalia..
I'm being really fussy of what I want is the other problem lol :)
Whats the problem here you see plenty os diesel st mondeos with towbars stuck out the back and lets face it ....its a ford diesel estate car not an aston martin or a ferarri that would be ruined by a towbar sticking out the back
Ive done that too, but what I got was a reply saying not available for st model which is what it says on there web site but that is just petrol version! And the sales person who answered the email just wanted to pass me on to a 3rd party and too much hassle to explain to them as there just looking at what it says on the screen!
I've now found 3 people on the ford st forums who all have westfalia fitted, 1 on a mondeo titanium not same bumper to look at, but which is same size bumper..
1 of the guys had his for a 2007 st tdci from hedley tow bars if anyone wants the info, they do mail order..
Another westfalia dealer who will help is mobile solutions in derby
think im all sorted now, will post a reply when fitted so it may help someone else in future :)
BIG Al
The point (not problem) is I don't want a fixed tow bar.simples,My choice!
Don't matter what car it is does it? My last 7 range rovers had fixed bars! Our other mondeo zetec s v6 has a fixed bar..like I say, this 1 I want a detachable out of pure choice, and I've now found 1 that should be delivered Wednesday.and I will update for future st owners lol
Just a update incase anyone else with a ST tdci estate wants a decent tow bar!
Got a westfalia vertical detachable tow bar, part No. 307247
Fitting was easy, westfalia say it doesn't fit but hey presto it fitted perfect with no issues at all! in fact, the instuctions come with templates for bumper cut and 1 of the said templates was for my st bumper? they also say it has a visible bumper cut,but its on the underside out of sight! Instructions also say remove bumper, there was no need at all! We just undone the 2 screws that held the underside of the bumper to the spare wheel well and dropped the rubber to the back box and lifted the bar up into place and put bolts in! Very very easy and cut the underside to suit, electrics fold up very simply out of sight..looks like I have no tow bar fitted! The nose weight of the above is 120kg so very good quality and easy to click in/out..total cost of bar was £230 including twin electrics (still got to fit 12s wiring) and including £10 delivery from PF jones in Manchester....fitting was free lol as I did it myself with my bestest mate ever ;) who is a mechanic with his own business and ramps :)
