Hi, having spent a wet 2 weeks in a tent in France, we've decided to get a caravan!

This means changing our vauxhall zafira. We're a family of 6 and have seen the perfect caravan for us - the Bailey Ranger 540/6, the triple bunk and rear single bed will be perfect for the children and when they go to bed we still have the front of the caravan for us!

The car we've been looking at is a Ford Galaxy 1.9 DTi, from my very limited knowledge, I think the car would be fine but thought I'd ask you too.

Also, we're wondering when is the right time to buy. If we bought now, we'd need to pay storage all through the winter months so is March time a better time to buy?

Thanks :)

Generally from now to before Xmas is best time to buy a caravan. Dealer prices might not look lower but they will be more inclined to take & offer or throw in extra items. Private sellers on ebay etc selling now & not prepared to wait for better spring prices just want rid so prices will be lower than in spring when demand is high.

But having said that, if you are looking for a specific caravan & you find a good one then buy it. Don't look too keen though, look disinterested, tell the seller its not really what you want but you might be interested if price is right.

Any time is the right time when you find a van that you like.

6 months storage about £200 not a big issue either way really in my view.

Before jumping the gun I suggest you check your driving licence entitlement because on a B licence the maximum train unit is 3500kg.
This means in effect if the maximum gross weight of the Galaxy is 2500kg, the biggest caravan you can tow with it is one with a MTPLM of 1000kgs and that will be a small caravan and the Ranger 540/6 is out of the question.
Of course if you have a B+E driving licence then there is no issue.

Your Zafira will tow that van NP we had one before downsizing, towed with a Nissan primera then a skoda superb, the max weight was around 1300 KG.
Also look at the Adria model with almost the same layout, they are slightly lighter

We placed a deposit of £500 on a used caravan with a main dealer in October 2010, with the majority of the purchase price to be paid on collection, which was the following April. So no storage fees for the first winter. The price at the time of agreeing to purchase in October was also much lower than other similar vans were priced in spring.

After we traded the caravan in earlier this year, the same dealer advertised it for sale at just £500 less than we paid for it, so in my opinion late in the year is the best time to purchase.

I'd particularly recommend looking around dealers (unless buying privately) on a cold, wet midweek day in late October to mid December, when people are starting to think of Christmas & dealers probably won't be selling as many vans!

Good luck with your purchasing!

Thanks for your replies :)

I passed my test in May 1997, which I know is when the licences changed, husband was in 1994, so he'll doing the towing ;)

We were under the impression that our zafira was inadequate as it's maximum towing capacity is 1100kgs, that's not taking into account that we're a family of 6!

We went looking again today, and we've definitely found the set up we want. We saw a 2009 bailey ranger 540/6 which was £9450 with water tanks and an awning, which, comparing to others we've viewed seems a fairly good price! We will look at the Adria range too though as they have been recommended as a family van.

I'm already getting excited at the thought of playing house in it! We've sold the tent today too, so that's the deposit sorted :) xx

The Ford Galaxy would be fine it has the renowned VW TDI engine and give your rear passengers a bit more leg room

Yes you need to work on actual information not generalisations like Skoda Bob posted above. If the Zafira has a max tow limit of 1100kg it will not be suitable.

Use the link Bobmel provided for some information. These sites aren't always correct but they should be a lot closer than someone suggesting "it will be fine"

If looking for a van around 1300-1400kg max loaded weight then ideally you want to be looking at cars with maybe around 1650/1700kg kerb weight and at least 1.9 diesel or 2ltr petrol and above in very general terms

In terms of van as and depending on budget then the Adria Altea 542DT has better (IMO) set up that the Bailey with its smaller beds and smaller washroom. The Adria is 1300kg max weight and 7.23m long

Thanks for the suggestion of the Adria, first looked ticked a lot of boxes, but it would mean the 14 & 17 year old sharing a double which could be a recipe for disaster :D

It's good to know there are other vans out there though, we've also looked at the pageant Bretagne which is similar, the triple bunk and rear diner is what we really like.

Budget is around £10000, we'd like an awning for that price too, if not we will leave the awning for a year or two, which isn't ideal, but getting the right van is the most important!

Hi

A 14 and 17 year old are possibly going to struggle in fixed bunks. The 542DT has triple bunk 2ft 6inc wide and full length for the top two bunks and only slightly shorter on bottom bunk.
The side dinette also makes up into a good sized single bed, leaving the front double for you

New 2014 versions can be specced as a 7 berth as well with another bunk over the side dinette, although over your budget

Do try the Bailey out with all the kids and check how beds are for size, we found they were very narrow like most UK vans

You may want to consider whether the 17 and possibly 14 year old might want to sleep in an annex in an awning as they may prefer their own space as I assume you have more than two kids from what you are saying (4?)

Awnings can be bought second hand very easily and saving huge amounts and even porch awnings like our Kampa Rally can have annex inner tents fitted or the Rally Plus comes with an annex it self

Yes we've got 4 daughters, aged 17, 14, 9 and 7!

The adria I looked at had a double bunk and the dinette becoming a double bed, (plus the front double for us) hence me discarding it, but a wider triple bunk would change that :)

We have thought about the awning option to give them space and it's something that is a possibility but I'd also like to have the room for them in the van if they choose to be.

We do have a budget of around £10000, £11000 at a push as we're also looking to change the car too.

Thanks for all your help so far, I really appreciate it :)
