Well we now have our tow car and hopefully will soon get our van.

I am posting this as it has now hit home that I will be effectively attaching a large, not really aerodynamic shed behind my car and tugging it along on the open road, my family will also be in the car and I will be on the open road amongst members of the public who may or may not hold me in the same regard as Jeremy Clarkson would.

Whilst I have really done my homework on outfit matching, Vehicle / Caravan weights, safe towing limits, GTW, noseweights etc (as you will see from previous threads) I have also read extensively regarding load distribution, what consitutes payload, importance of tyre pressures and breakaway cable attachment points and other such interesting topics.

In theory I should be well prepared and up for the challenge but I must admit I am a little (lot) petrified. I don't mind real snakes but the thought of snaking fills me with dread, I fully expect to be hooked up to the van and have snaked, flipped the van and had my detachable tow bar disengage all within 30 seconds of leaving the dealership.

Is it really that bad, is it natural to be apprehensive and what is it really like towing a huge caravan on the back of a car....

Its natural for you to be nervous but for every story of a detached van or other accident there'll be hundreds of vans that arrive safely at site without incident.

If you pack your van correctly, hitch up right, respect the weights and drive at 60 or below you'll be absolutely fine. Accidents happen but you can lower the risk by taking your time and checking everything.

If you're really bothered about towing I would suggest you go on a Caravan Club course. After that you'll know what to expect.

Hope that helps.

It ain't that bad. Never had a "snake" in years of caravanning and trailering. How many have you heard of "flipped"? Very few.

Towing a caravan does require greater care, observation & planning but it's no big deal. Take a course with one of the clubs if you need a confidence boost.

Many caravanners simply buy a secondhand caravan off ebay or wherever & hitch up & go with no knowlege of any of what you have mentioned & tbf you don't see that many caravan accidents. So you can conclude that with the knowledge you have gained you will be just fine. A caravan that is correctly loaded & matched to towcar will not snake & as you say your outfit is correctly loaded & matched you will have no problems.

Do remember at all times you have a caravan behind you though. It sounds obvious but you will sometimes see outfits being driven at motorway speeds as if the driver believes he is not towing.

"Whats it really like?"

An awful lot more relaxing for me than charging about solo.

A well-matched, properly loaded, carefully maintained caravan behind a stable, adequately powerful and heavy looked-after towcar = a chance to appreciate the journey as well as the destination. My holiday starts when I hook up.

A little apprehension when you start out is to be expected (and is healthy anyway), but it`s a bit like the statement about sex - if it`s a pain in the ass you`re doing it wrong.

Best of luck!

just take your time dont let your self get to worried a Caravan Club towing course is excellent advise,Remember to allow extra room when turning, look well ahead slow down and accelerate gently you will soon get used to the extra length and width. As for snakes remember to hold the speed down when going down hills keep control and you will be fine.

I returned to caravaning last year after a 11 year break. I had a week of sleepless nights prior to collecting our van from the dealers. The big day arrived.....got the van home then wondered why I had been so nervous.....then it happened again prior to our first weeks holiday....arrived at site...set up...tea on...beer in hand...beaming smile..

We all go through it....just enjoy it, but be careful and don't rush ..

:)

You'll be fine. Just take your time, ignore any idiots around you, check your mirrors lots and don't turn in too soon on the corners.

It's a doddle once you settle into it.

We've always found it helpful to research the route online as well.
With Streetview you can look at the road ahead of time and change route if necessary. I have a very different route to where we store our van, depending on whether I'm towing.

Excellent suggestion to do a towing course. They are held in various location around the country and the caravan club supply the caravan, you just need the tow vehicle with tow bar. That way you will know exactly what to expect when you get a van.

My hubby does NOT like towing. But, he has conceded that he sees more scenery than when tearing around, he also forgets the van on the back to the extent that he relaxes into the task. He is more aware of traffic, we always check the towball weight and we always try to pack safely. No snaking, no accidents so far (touch wood). You really will just accept the towing bit as part of the joys of having an ensuite luxury hotel room on wheels.

If it makes sense, the thought of towing at first was worse than actually doing it,, at the end of the day slow and steady, I do more now than oh, because he doesn't like it, and I don't mind

caravan club link

In the age of satnav do not trust it when towing a caravan unless it is a specific caravan/HGV model.

As lizzy23 says, slow and steady, enjoy and don't forget the bottle opener

It is quite easy.I was crapping myself a bit fetching our twin axel.I have towed since i was 20 and now 47 but i had never towed anything quite so big.I had to bring it back to mansfield from birmingham.I was worried for nothing. No words can say it,just do it and relax into it.And remember, towing the van is part of the holiday,so cruise at a good speed and enjoy

I towed our new/old Caravan for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago and you are apprehensive but as others have said, those nerves serve you well as you are a little cautious but they soon go, we drove from Manchester to Leeds and just took our time, didn't go over 50, the Car actually felt like it wasn't towing a lot of the Journey and thought to myself when we arrived 'That wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be' and felt more confident coming back 4 days later but still took my time.

It's a weird learning experience but if you enjoy driving and having to listen to the OH for longer than normal....then your sorted.....

Thanks for all the feedback. A mate of mine has found a tow course in our locale (one of the B&E training centres) who do a specific caravan day course for £140 so will be looking closely at that or the CC one if they have one near me, in the near future.

I have towed a trailer tent in the past without any real issues (aside from being apprehensive at first), however that was a lot smaller than a van and tended to directly track the towing vehicle, so I didn't have to think that much. I did quite enjoy driving at just under 60mph and letting the rest of them just get on with it though. My concerns are not so much driving along an A road as such but more how to position myself when turning left or right or at roundabouts etc to avoid clipping something (as I witnessed a caravan bouncing off the kerb at a roundabout a couple of weekends ago). I would guess that road positioning and manouvering would be a major part of the tow course anyway.
