Bit gutted, i think the clutch or DMF or both might need replacing on our Cmax 2.0 TDCi Ghia. Its started to make some strange rattling sounds when clutch half way at idle. Wondered if anyone could recommend places for repair at reasonable prices. Thanks.

Could be the release bearing. Without listening to it it's difficult to say how badly it needs doing.

Who does your servicing? I would avoid main dealers though £1200+ probably.

Have you had a listen under the bonnet? Drivers side low down noise could be a crank pulley or belt tensioners.

Noise from where the engine/gearbox join is the clutch and DMF.
If the clutch was going it would be worth replacing the lot anyway. Unless selling right after the job was done.

Suppose i really need to find out what the damage is and the options available. We were thinking of changing car soon (see Xtrail thread)so will have to make a decision once we know the full extent of the problems.

What year is it??

As said before, it may not be the clutch...

It could be the bottom pulley coming apart. As they are made in two parts and held together with a 'doughnut' of rubber in the middle.

When this happens, it can also cause a 'chirp' sound on the auxiliary belt.

Its a 2007 56 plate. I had noticed a small rattle some time back but it would only happen briefly first thing after starting and reversing out of driveway. This seems worse now and is audible when depressing and releasing clutch in 'neutral'.

DMFs have proved to be unreliable with lots of makes of car. Many makes can now be fitted with the old-style solid flywheels, which work out a lot cheaper

If its approx 70000m I would guess its goosed, solid flywheels are cheaper, others on here have had them done, get plenty of prices!

Reputable garages round here would do a solid flywheel / clutch for 'around' £500 - £700.

The kits alone are £300 (ISH), so work the costing's from there...

Also, depending on the mileage, anywhere from 70/80000 miles I don't want scare but...

'Expect' the bottom pulley to be next, then the injectors and the fuel pump to give problems soon,
as cars of these years (like our Mondeo was a 2006 /56 plate) seemed to be problematic compared to later TDCI's.

Mechanics I spoke to said it was because that type of engine was 'rushed', to make Ford say 'Look at me, we got a better engine than you!!! kind of thing....

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Odd that mines past 170,000 miles and cost me very little.

Several have been reported with mileages of 300,000 and 500,000 going through the auctions.

In the last 10 years my family have owned 4 diesel skodas, and I have had tow Mondeos. All 4 of the Octavias have had to have DMF and clutch replaced ( one of them twice )and only one of them towed a caravan ( and that much lighter than mine ). My Mondeos not a clutch problem from either, in fact not a breakdown or any replacement other than service parts in either.
