just bought a range rover for towing my caravan, i will be going to fetch it on saturday 1st november from bolton, the vehicle is currently not taxed, how do i tax it so that i can drive it home, with the new tax laws, can't seem to get my head around it

You will need to make sure it is insured & hope your insurer has updated database(MID)& MoT'ed of course. If it is Sat morn & post offices are open then you can take your part of V5(registration document)& tax it there. If you have internet access you can tax it online, not a good idea to use a public wi-fi though as you will be inputting credit card details, or probably easiest you can tax by phone. Read this.
its not that easy, my insurance is do to start on saturday, but i have no documents for this vehicle as yet as i only won it on ebay today, i suppose i could get the seller to send me the v5 part by post and if it arrives ontime, go to post office sat morning , they seem to be making things so hard

Provided seller has V5 when you collect car then you are ok. You can tax by phone from seller's address using your credit/debit card provided car is on DVLA database as insured in your name & MoT'ed. It is therefore important that your insurer updates MID(motor insurance database) asap. Usually they do this as soon as you insure. No tax disc required anymore, of course.
If you want to tax at post office you can do this at a po nr where you are collecting car provided you have buyer's portion of V5 in your hand.
thanks its all falling in place now, i have got the seller to send me the 16 digit ref number from the v5 and i will be able to tax it online sat morning prior to setting off up to bolton

It was SO much easier when you could buy it with tax. I have a car for sale. Still keeping it on the road until it sells to overcome these problems. That means I can't use my new car.

waits anxiously for Skoda Boab to appear.
Oh and Billy nice to see an old friend is still in the land of the living. Been a naughty boy again.

As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Sorry, I still can't see the difference. Nobody really loses, it's just that you are now obliged to cash in your remaining tax, which you weren't before, so they're getting double bubble every time. I would expect that most people would cash in what was left of their tax disc if there was a long time left or if they sold to a dealer anyway.
I think that there's a lot of fuss about nothing over this change.
There is a difference to the old way,you used to leave the remainining days of the month on the car and either transfer the rest if there is any to the new owner or cash it in.Now the previous days of the month are lost and the new owner has to pay for them when they did not own the vehicle.
I thought under new laws came in October 1st you could no longer sell a licensed vehicle with part of year road fund licence. had to be full year or nothing ??????????????????
Can anyone clarify ? Vaguely remember reading something some were
PS I was under the impression you could only cashin 6months or whole year not 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/9/10/11 months ie if cashin 11 months you would only get 6 months back ????
