Posted this on Life in general & not sure right place so posted here too. Sorry if wrong to do so.
I don't know if anyone on here can give me advice. I have a 31/2 year VW golf 2ltr TDI Bluemotion. 2 days ago I heard a horrendous grinding noise from the passenger side rear wheel. I guessed it might have something to do with brakes. I went straight to VW dealers where I have all my servicing done. They said they could fit me in Thursday (today is Tuesday) & I was ok to drive. The mechanic came out and looked through the wheel feeling the brake pads & disc. He said he wasn't sure but it looked like the pads & disc need replacing.
So here's the thing.
I have looked up and on the last service on 12th November the brake pads were reported at 7mm. From new they are 12mm so in 3 years & 1 month old after 34000 miles they had used 5mm yet it looks that in the last 3 months & 3000 miles they have used up 4mm+. Doesn't sound logical to me. We have not towed the van since that service.
This is my 3rd VW and this never needed doing on either of them. It is the rear too and common wisdom says rear brake pads last a lot longer than front. I believe it's 2 changes front to rear.
My feeling is to question them like mad on Thursday if they tell me it's the pad & discs because to me logically something was wrong at the service or they lied on the paperwork.
Am I being daft? I want to see what you think before I go as I am a woman and I don't want to be baffled by their language. Advice please.

I think your right.I would question them not only that, i would ask for the workshop manager to explain this.Me thinks they have not been checked not unless you have done a lot of braking..good luck
Might be the pads. You can usually see for yourself if they are getting thin.
A common problem though is a small piece of road stone which has become wedged between the brake disc and the back plate. Easy to remove but you will need to take the wheel off to have a look.
Daves1
Your pads will have gone they only last an average of 30K on the fronts and 45K on the rear, there is a possibility of the wheel bearing, these can go at any mileage
It's not every time I brake just when braking slowly, you know as you come up to a junction leon copa.

VWs (and audi) are known to have issues with rear brake calipers binding/sticking as so little braking is done by the rear wheels. I have had this problem on 2 VW golf's and one Audi.Maybe the caliper is sticking and the pad is not coming clear of the disc when the handbrake released. If the pad has worn downto the metal it will squeal when the brakes are applied and may have scored the disc. As previously stated by Dave it may be a stone lodged between the back plate and disc which is causing the noise, this may have scored the disc, only way to check is to remove the wheel
OK car in dealers. They have just phoned Calliper pin seized. This has caused breaks to bind (really????) and now the discs are damaged.
So new discs need too which is no surprise really.
So questions?
Should the pin have been greased at last service in November?
Should it have been greased or looked at when the brake fluid had it's change in December?
What causes a seized pin?
I knew something was wrong & despite me going in on Tuesday saying please help I was sent away & had to wait until today. I believe the damage is worse because of that. So am I being picky or unreasonable?
Opinions please.

Hi no they just check if pads n discs are ok .i no its a common problom with vw audi seat .i had leon 61 plate and when it was cold mine used stick more . I drove very slowly and pull hand brake on and off a couple times a week never got stuck again
Slider pins should be lubricated with synthetic grease when calipers are reassembled after new pads fitted but I don't think it is part on normal annual service schedule & calipers are not touched when changing brake fluid except bleed nipples. As pointed out, not unknown on VWs. Just one of those things, I guess. Salty roads over winter will not have helped.
I suppose if caliper had been stripped, freed up & greased as soon as noise was heard then things might have been saved but this is the sort of thing the enthusiastic home mechanic might do, a garage will just fit new parts.
Thanks guys that really helped.
So picked up the car after telling them I was still upset at being turned away Tuesday so they took 40% off the labour charge & didn't charge for the wiper blades that had been fitted because they noticed they were worn.
Think I got a good deal in the end and they tried. Best of all Harold (the cars name) is back to it's normal self.
Really appreciate the help on the forum. Thank you.

no your not being unreasonable, a proper check should have been done when it comes down to brakes, and as for them not charging for the wiper blades, well did you ask them to do it? did they inform you before they did it? in that case they are not allowed to charge you either!
Stripping calipers & greasing slider pins is not part of a normal service, its something a home mechanic might do. Brake check as part of a normal service will be just operation & inspection & measurement of discs & pads.
Garage appears to have fitted wipers & reduced labour charges as a goodwill gesture.
Billy, lynm said that the pad and discs where new, the person that did them clearly had only done half a job if they wherent greased at the time of replacing, using copper slip on them lasts years not months
it is illegal for any work to be done on your car, without your permission, they had no permission given to do so
