Hi All,

Just purchased our first caravan - Extremely excited and eager to get out and about with it this year!!

I think I have however made a school boy error.  Before buying the caravan I did lots of research online as to what would be suitable in terms of the van and had an even more difficult task as we had intended to tow with a MINI Cooper D.  All the information I could find online states that the car has a max braked tow weight of 750kg so caravan choices were obviously limited to older, lightweight caravans but we found one!

I've booked the car in for tow bar fitting but decided to be 100% sure and dig out the V5C.  This is showing the car as having NO tow rating at all.  I'm aware that MINI decided not to rate certain cars from 2010 onwards however the car is 2009 so should be rated.

Can I get the V5C amended?  Whats the line here?  I've looked into changing the car and unfortunately this isn't possible for another year or so.  I'm staying positive and hoping the V5C can be updated but would welcome anybody elses experience of similar situations.

Thanks in advance.

If you look on the plate with the weights on it, usually just inside the door, does it have a gross train weight listed? If it has a GTW then they must be expecting you to be able to tow with it but perhaps this information is not always printed on the V5.

I would also check with the manufacturer to see what they say about the towing capabilities and get this in writing if there is any doubt about the car and its use for towing.

Rob

PS Just out of interest, what caravan did you find that was under 750kg max weight? We had a 1982, 2 berth and even that was 850kg.

Thanks for the reply Rob.  I've contacted the DVLA and they've said that they wouldn't necessarily record this information.  I've also contacted MINI UK and they're confirming with their technical teams and coming back to me.

Inside the door, the following is listed although I'm not sure what the information means as its not labelled.  There are 4 lines :-

1540kg

(blank)kg

1-855kg

2-720kg

Any ideas? 17

Both `Honest John` and `UK Tow.Com` show your car as having no towing capacity.

If it isn`t on your V5 it sounds like they haven`t bothered type approving that model, if thats the case you can`t `add` a towing limit to your V5.

Hope I`m wrong as to why there isn`t anything on your V5, a very expensive mistake if that is the case. Best of luck sorting it out.

I've just had a quick look on the plate on our car. The first weight is the max weight of the car, second is the gross train weight and third and fourth weights are the max axle weights. As you have a blank against the gross train weight I think you'll find that your car is not type approved for towing so if you did tow with it your insurance etc would be void.

Sorry to be negative here but it sounds like you need to change the car. Best to wait for the official reply before you go any further with this.

Thanks for the replies -  I've had a response from MINI and unfortunately its not good news.  Cars registered prior to 01/09/09 were tow rated for 750kg.  Cars registered after this date weren't regardless of whether they were the 2009 model or not.  My car was registered on the 07/09 so a week over and although its the same car is not tow rated.  MINI are also unable to change the tow rating, even on the basis that it is the same car as prior to the registration dates.

Frustrating but not much I can do about it under the circumstances so I'll need to look into options to replace the car instead.

Thanks again for your help 17

Wow, that's a jip, and seems similiar to the situation Toyota Prius owners have, in so much as the car is not Type Aproved for towing.

Although as it turns out there are firms that will supply specific tow bars for the Prius, fitting one no doubt invalidates any warranty or insurance I would imagine, as far as UK registered cars go.

Put simply with that information on the plate it would be illegal for you to tow with it. The three readings in there are the Max gross weight, the front axle load and the rear axle load. There bring no max train weight the car has not been homologated to tow with and as such no trailer may be attached to it.

Bill

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Out of interest, if the car has no tow weight, would the car still be able to have a towbar and say, a towball mounted bike rack? (btw, not something I am doing, or contemplating. Just curious

No. No max train weight on plate means no towbar type approved for it so no possibility of towing with it. You can however, tow with a pre 1997 car that has no max train weight on the plate so a 1996 mini would do the trick.

You can contact VOSA and argue that as a type approval has been issued for your model,it should apply to your car, what have you got to lose?

Type Approval is based on the chassis number range, so you can argue all you like with VOSA, but if the car in question is in the "banned" range you will be banging your head on a brick wall.

The Mondeo ST220 is not type approved either. A 3L engine with 220bhp would be an ideal towcar, but Ford didnt type approve it.

Same shell as all the other MK3 Mondeo's, just a different engine and exhaust.

My apologies my comment about the 1997 mini was a bit tongue in cheek.

Also has different suspension to other M<ondeos, I believe this is the reason it is not approved for towing
