Hello folks, I am looking to change my towcar this year (07 Cr-v dti) and after looking at different cars I keep being drawn to the Skoda Superb Elegance estate. I have read all the reports until tired of looking, I know it has won Towcar of the year on a couple of occasions but there is no substitute to hearing it from the horses mouth so to speak. The question is does anyone on here tow with one and what do they think about it ? Looking at the 170ps model.

Skoda by make is a brilliant car.the superb elegance estate 170 bhp with the 4x4 drive is a peach. would have 1 if it was a bit heavier.my van is 1800kgs.

That will be the 170 Cr unit quiet and powerful, manual or DSG, all swift caravans can be towed except the challenger 640
Check what tow car for reference

You wont even notice, the van there, Skoda have said they have stopped putting kerb weights down, in the manuals and instead put the max tow weights of what the cars are capable of, so you would be well under what Skoda quote as the max.

I looked at the Skoda range but they were to light, 4x4 was OK passats
are the same

Good cars but lightweight compared with other makes

My Superb 170CR DSG estate is the only car I've ever towed with and I find it very relaxing. The DSG box means no stirring the gears to maintain speed and there's plenty of power to make swift progress (occasionally surprising other motorists who assume I've the acceleration ability of a tractor).

Our Swift Major 4FB is pretty much bang on the 85% match. The van with all it's contents weighs about 50Kg under it's MTPLM.

There's two of us plus one dog and it swallows everything we need including an 85Kg mobility scooter in the boot. With careful weight distribution and correct tyre pressure there's not much suspension sag at the rear (despite the large overhang) and certainly nothing to be worried about.

According to my holiday spreadsheet I've towed just shy of 8,000 miles with it and I've calculated 30mpg economy on average across all my trips.

If I were to change I'd definitely go for another one. On our New Year trip it even got us and the 'van out of our village despite the side road we live on being on a slope and covered in ice!

No information ther that is of any use whatsoever Bob. No indication of kerbweights ( found on the V5 whether Skoda say they publish them or not,). No indication of max gross eeight or of maximum train weights so all in all a bit of a waste of time. As a dealer you should no better.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Go for a good test drive in the superb, and if it's already got a tow ball, hitch your van up and you will see it will have no problems towing your van.
Most dealers will let you have a half day or even a full days test,
As I mentioned Skoda due to the vehicles getting lighter, now use power to weight ratios when working out there maximum tow weights, this applies across the whole of the Audi VW range, they would not quote such maximum weights if the vehicles were not capable of it, or it would be false advertising.

All manufacturers quote these weights and have done for years but the fact that the car will actually pull such a weight is irrelevant. The question is whether it will pull it safely and be stable. Good practice suggests that towing a caravan that weighs more than the cars kerbweight is not a good idea and that it can be a major cause if instability.
As a reader and contributor to forums such as these for nearly 20 years I have lost count if the number of new caravanners who have been advised that what they want to tow is within the car they are about to buy's abilities only to find out later that whilst it has sufficient power to do the job that it is not very stable and unpleasant bearing on the unsafe to tow with. Such sharp practice by motor dealers and caravan dealers is to be deprecated.

We get VW Golfs 1.6 TDi BlueMotion Hatch 5 Speed manual at work, around 70 vehicles in the Fleet, although one of the lads on my level has got the Skoda Superb 1.6 TDi GreenLine Hatch, 6 Speed manual.

The Skoda is going to beat the pant's of the Golf for towing I would imagine.

Yes I need to book a test drive, the possibility of a tow bar being on one already would be very slim I would imagine.

without doubt the 170, order your tow bar at the same time as you order the car and not after.
that way it comes with everything done, re-map, dedicated wiring and an excellent towbar.
