We have decided to replace our tow car with a shogun and our budget is around £4000. There seems to be quite a choice out there but we favour the 3.2 equippe or similar. Is there anything we should look out for when doing the rounds or can anyone recommend a particular model please? Any help much appreciated.

Rust!

Along the rear wheel arches.

Also the fuel filler pipe under the rear right wheel arch runs through there and is exposed to everything the wheels throw up - even though it's behind a 'cover', at least that's what they call it.

BIGGEST concern they say is the fuel pump on the DiD (mk3's)

As I said about the rusting filler pipe, if it has / is failing, it can let water / debris into fuel tank, then even overwhelming the fuel filter and 'destroying' the fuel pump.

Why do I say destroying?

A recon'd fuel pump is 'around' £1500, a new one is £3000!!!!!! But word is, also parts for these are getting scarce, pushing prices even further.

I don't know if the mk4's have the same fuel pump issues, as they went to common rail fueling, or if they moved the location of the fuel filler pipe.

Rear camber bolts seize solid and they have to be cut out. You can't use a gas axe due to their location. And as you'll be towing, check to see how bad they may already are and budget for them being done.

Don't know about manuals, as I have the auto. Much easier for towing, no clutch to worry about with all that engine power / torque they've got.

When test driving one, try and get if off tarmac and check to see if ALL the 4wd system works....

If the wheel display on the dash constantly flashes after selecting a 4 wheel drive setting, there's usually a 'switching' problem (or worse) on the transfer box. DO NOT be fobbed off by the seller!!! My '4LLc' setting has started doing this, but as I don't use that setting, I'm in no hurry to repair it.

Fuel economy. Don't believe the book, or what people say.
You don't buy one of these and worry about MPG.

I'm on HERE too as I own a 2003 LWB Shogun Elegance.

There's a wealth of info on the POCUK, and it helped me avoid some right 'dogs' when I was looking for one.

HTH,

Chris.

Thank you so much for your reply Chris. Will let OH read this and see where we go from here. I realise that with our budget anything is going to have potential problems but better to know.
Thanks again

Chris

I agree with all the above but would add,
Injectors - needed replacing at 38000 miles. Transfer box would not go in gear smoothly and grated badly at times.
Never happy with mine but I realise that is just one of thousands that seem to be OK.

It's a shame really.

If they had of sorted them problems, I would have another.

But after reading on the POCUK site, even with the Mk4's, they haven't sorted the problems.

So when the time comes and I need to change mine....

Sorry but it won't be another Shoggy.

I'll be thinking of going back to Volvo. Maybe an XC70 or 90 as I can't see anything else out there that appeals to me....

Shame really as Shoguns are a good truck - nice high driving position, good (heavy?) tow horse with plenty power so you have to think about caravan weights...

Oh, and if you are going to buy any 4x4, don't buy near or over the winter.

People / sellers like t add a bit of 'winter tax' if you know how I mean - same as 'summer tax' for convertibles.

Really trog??

I thought people stopped importing after the banking crash??

£ against other currencies made it not worth it????

But. If you can do it, at least you can rust proof prep' it yourself before the british weather ruins it.

Some Pajeros I've heard, are even 'unplated'. Meaning you can tow nearly anything...

there are still fresh imports on Ebay but it dosnt have to be a fresh one.. it comes down to the age i suppose.. i just paid £2500 for a 2005 import.. its actually twenty years old but with 80,000 miles on the clock its in very nice condition..

i have owned one for eight years.. now i have two..

my 2.5 is a bit slow for van towing the 2.8 seems to have a lot more power.. i just like the things..

if an ebay search is done select highest price first.. that is where the nice ones are.. mine are the SWB versions..

trog

ps.. my pair here

I looked into buying an import Trog,i was told evan though they have low milage they do a lot of miles more when sitting still in traffic jams in japan ?

I had a shogun once, would pull the queen mary only problem is,if your using it every day its a wee bit thirsty on fuel, and that was the 3.2 diesel.
