We are new to caravanning and just picked up our first caravan yesterday. We are storing it in a Cassoa Gold rated storage facility, which to be fair, the security is second to none. However, they will only allow us to store it with a hitch lock and not a wheel clamp. Our insurance stipulates that it must be stored with a hitch lock and wheel clamp. Their storage parking license states that we are responsible if theft occurs. So that leaves us in a sticky situation if the worst were to happen. My question is, is this the norm in such facilities as we really are novices and this doesn't sit easy with us? Many thanks in advance.
no its not normal, go with what your insurance states unless you get a written confirmation stating that the storage will pay out in the event of theft without the wheel clamp
The main reason the storage won't allow wheel clamps is just in case they need to move the van, to another position, this can be done by releasing the break and pushing it
When you say...."They will only allow us to store it with a hitch lock and not a wheel clamp", who are you referring to actually. I take it you mean the site owner?
However, it doesn't leave you in a sticky situation at all. Just take note of what is written down and not what is required verbally. If the storage parking licence (terms and conditions) stipulates that you are responsible for theft plus the minimum requirement of the caravan insurance requires both security measures then that is enough to over rule any other requirement by law.
It's your property you are protecting at the end of the day so don't get caught out by only fitting just a hitch lock in the interest of the site owner to make it easier for them otherwise if you do need to make an claim in the future then you may lose out as the responsibility is yours as confirmed in the terms and conditions.
Thanks all. Yes the site owner has refused to accept a wheel clamp, but the terms and conditions on their license frees them of all responsibility should the worst happen (we read through their license this morning after dropping off last night) Apparently, as the site owner has said to me today, the vans are stored so close together that there isn't enough room to fit a clamp. I am really not happy about this, but wasn't sure if this was just the done thing wherever I was to take it?
Yes, I think I am going to have to ring around and find somewhere else. I wasn't sure if I was over thinking it or worrying unnecessarily. But you live and learn....

Checkley 1973, I see you are not a million miles away from me, could you let me know where you store yours please?
Well if you put your own location in your profile may help like 'Checkley1973' has done.
Have you tried asking your Insurers to waive the 'wheel clamp ' warranty?
If you are happy with your existing storage security it might be easier than changing storage sites.

The thing is, how would the ins co know it was on there in the first place?
They come off in seconds for the determined thief anyway. All you have to say is they took it with them you've got he key. Would you really want a stolen caravan back anyway.
My Guy allows what ever security we choose, at one time we used to leave the hitch and wheel clamp keys with him which were kept in the safe. He not bothered for keys since he has re-sited the vans in his compounds as he no longer needs to move vans about. If you guy says that the vans are stored too close together it makes wheel clamps difficult to fit I would be worried that the van may get clonked when the neighbouring van gets moved.
------------- Just saying
If all is not lost where is it then?
