Hi I'm new to caravaning and have just bought a swift corvette 4 berth (think its a 1994). I couldn't believe how heavy it felt when towing I drive a 2014 160bhp insignia estate. The car was under continuous pressure I'm wondering is this normal? On hills it was a embarrassment I had to rev the car hard to climb the hills. Can anyone advise me is this normal or not?
Dragging a brick shaped object behind does feel a bit strange at first but what you are experiencing doesn't sound normal. Has the caravan been serviced recently? It sounds like the brakes may be binding, do the brake drums get very hot when towing?
Yea I I had to power down the hill and it's a rather steep hill. Only bought the caravan on Friday and I think it hasn't moved for 2 years prior to that. I've no idea regarding service. I'm going to jack it up and give the wheels a spin to see if they are moving freely. Completely forgot to check the heat of the drums.
Get it serviced before you use it again. If it has been standing for 2 years the brakes have probably seized but also the tyres are probably perished as well. A service will also check the gas and electrical systems, the gas hose needs replacing every few years and that may be out of date as well. Spending a little bit of money now will make your outfit safer.
You also mentioned that you thought the van was a 1994 model, if you tell us the 10th digit of the CRIS number etched on the windows we can work out the year for you. I presume it came without CRIS documents otherwise you would already know the year.
Probably best not to put the entire CRIS number online. Unlikely for anything to happen but best not to.
Is it a diesel or petrol? I had a petrol Mondeo and it towed fine but on the hills i would drop a gear or 2 to make sure i was on the powerband.
When i bought the diesel it was totally different, although it has less power it has way more torque so would pull itself up the hills with hardly any gearchanges at all.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Firstly would echo the advice of others a service should be first on list
We tow an Elddis 1320 MTPLM caravan with the 130PS Insignia Estate and I do notice it on the back. If I let the revs dip too far it can feel breathless and I can sort of understand the feeling of it being heavy however keep it in the power band (which for my car seems to be around 1700-1800rpm+) and it does pull cleanly and I dont have to power down hills.
I do find that on single lanes I am in 4th a lot and dual carriage way I doubt 6th gear would be used. I had to use 3rd gear on a short sharp hill last weekend but part of that was me not paying attention to the revs.
"hasn't moved for 2 years' was the hand brake on ? bet the brakes have seized, not a good idea to leave the brake on when in storage for any length of time.
Brakes drums may not have seized but brake cables seized in outer sleeve.
I replaced two cables on a BPW chassis for £34 with postage from Western Trailers Exeter Only nearside had seized, actual drums and shoes were in good order but had to replace two one use 27mm nuts sourced locally for £18 with vat.
You need to measure the length of outer cable or cover to get correct size for your van and type of fitting on outer end of cable which connects to link arm.
Quite lucky for all concerned, considering all the rookie errors made.
Main one being actually towing it without all the obvious mechanical/safety checks being done.
I think the OP has a lot of caravanning homework to study!
Sorry if that seems harsh but I think you were very lucky as this could have all ended badly for yourself and other road users.

Some years back i had the brake return spring snap. I was towing with a 4x4 and never noticed the brakes sticking as you had to physically release them as i pulled forward.

It would have towed the van with the brakes on.
Had it not been moved for two years though!

No get it serviced for around £100 by a good mobile carrvan service engineer. Yes you may find other faults you dont like but a least you can work down the list starting with the most that reflect safety first.
