Why would you want to? VW are having lots of problems at the moment because of their automatic remapping.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Which engine would this be & what is power output as standard? The lower powered VW diesels certainly benefit from ECU remap, the older 2.5 diesel can be taken from 105bhp to over 140, engine is ok with this because the later engines were available from VW with 170bhp output.
More modern diesels are much higher output anyway, for example 1.6 already at 115bhp probably should not be remapped for higher output than this. Do not confuse proper remap of ECU with the diesel tuning boxes which are best avoided.
If engine is remapped for higher output, your insurance should be informed although plenty do not bother.
I use to have that 136bhp engine in a Citroen C5 and I had that remapped. It meant that I could use sixth gear much more when I was towing. I found no difference in fuel consumption.

Yes! I see many people forget to uprate their clutches too....
Don't know about auto boxes though.....
What evidence have you regarding clutch and gearbox upgrade`s have you?
People to ask are the people who do the remap. You will never look back once done, the torque, saving the clutch as you dont change gear when towing as much & box. Had all my towing cars chipped. Never a problem on all cars.

Its not a hangover, its wine flu!
You can't easily upgrade a clutch or gearbox & there is no need anyway. Many diesels are already available as standard in higher power outputs so some suit remapping more than others, one just needs to be sensible. The older 2.5 VW turbo diesel for example. Last variants were up to 170bhp so the older 105bhp engines can be uprated to 140bhp no probs.
There is a difference between getting a sensible & useful increase in power/torque say, from a motorhome engine, & boosting a Golf tdi to ridiculous levels as some do. Remapping should not be done in isolation, obviously account should be taken of other factors like braking & so on.

Not entirely true!
My 2001 Passat (130TDI Sport) had 130 bhp, 229 lb/ft of torque and a 6 speed gearbox. The S and SE models had 130 bhp, 215 lb/ft and a 5 speed gearbox. The engine was downrated as the 5 speed box was operating too close to its limits.
No doubt details such as this aren`t mentioned to those getting their cars chipped or having a tuning box fitted - it was certainly never mentioned in their sales pitches.
