Hi. We have just returned from a trip to Dumfries. The van got stuck on the site due to the heavy rain & the farmer pulled it out with his tractor. Does anyone know of a decent 4x4 estate car that would help to alleviate getting stuck in the mud? We are not after a LR, Sportage or similar. Thanks. Eddie
My Skoda Octavia estate 2.0TDi 4x4 got me out of mud pulling the van with no problems, just have to turn traction control off, however I do have all season tyres on with the M+S (mud and snow) symbol and the 3 peaked mountain snowflake symbol as well, so better grip.

Do you have a budget, maximum age of vehicle, diesel or petrol auto or manual etc?
I had the same issues in October so decided to go down the 4x4 route aswell, depending on your needs and budget I found that the Nissan Xtrail 2.0 or 2.2 DCI depending on age or the Lexus RX300 3.0 petrol had better reviews than anything else so yesterday I put a deposit down on a Nissan Terrano, the issues I have now is that the Terrano will take me over the 3.5t limit on my licence where the Xtrail or rx300 wouldn't have
i have had the lexus rx300 now for 6 years never had any problems runs like a dream on lpg very happy with it. You can now pick them up as little as a grand it is a lot of car for little money
7-10 grand. diesel. 2+ litres, estate type ( enough room for 2 dog cages side by side, astra estate current car ). van is an avondale avocet 1000kg ish. Hopefully less than 4 years old, but flexible on that. Thanks
You have the choice of that or Skoda which is same engine etc, theres no other 4x4 car available, only the suv's that you say you don't want so hobson's choice really. Buy it before anybody else does.

Some good suggestions of 4x4s have been given BUT the OP (Eddie) has said they don't want a proper 4x4 but wants a 4x4 estate car.
With the exception of pickups most 4 x 4s are estate cars. There are not many 4 x 4 sedans.
