Hi,
I've towed my own elddis vogue hurricane a number of times on the motorway and only ever had wobble/snaking once when over taking a very slow lorry, moved out a bit fast
Yesterday I collected my friends new to her van as she had a delay in getting her towbar. On the m4 I had multiple times where it started to snake. It was fine gently came off gas and it settled down. Bit unnerving though. I can normally tow mine at 60 in good conditions without issues, but was managing just over 50, any faster as it was starting to wobble. Conditions were pretty good and towed mine down same bit of motorway before.
Would I be right to assume its because it was empty and therefore not well balanced. Its a bigger van, mine is just under 20" (mtplm 1100kg) this coachman amara is like 22" and heavier mtplm is 1280. Just within my safe towing limit. We are going to load it today, and check noseweight.
Possibly as it was empty and also low nose weight.I have the ATC on my van and the only time i have felt it operate is when empty taking to dealers for annual servicing.
It's a common cause if the caravan tyres are not balanced as the bounce can affect the stability. In severe cases it can cause snaking so it's worth getting both wheels checked at a tyre fitting bay to confirm if they are out of balance or not. If they are both okay then at least you have eliminated it from the problem.
Thank you for your replies. They are brand new tyres put on by the dealer prior to purchase. I would hope that they have been balanced - maybe we should ask.
Also spare wheel is one that goes in rack under chassis behind the axle, only had one gas bottle and battery in van at front so I will be interested to see noseweight this afternoon.
That's the problem, manufacturers don't balance the tyres as the wheels are already fitted on the chassis when they are shipped over from Al-ko in Germany. Don't put your lives in danger and wait till the caravan overturns, be safe and get them checked even it costs just a fiver.
I'm very interested in this post. We have just gone back to a caravan from a motorhome and are also having a problem with a little snaking over 50 MPH which is also unnerving the two of us.
We have an Elddis Affinity and a Honda CRV which is a 78% match.
We checked our nose weight and it is 75KG.
We don't have very much in our van as far as weight in comparison to what we used have when we used to tow.
Where would we take the caravan to check the wheel balancing?
Caravan wheel balancing is exactly the same as balancing car wheel tyres therefore you can take the caravan wheels to any tyre fitting bay such as Kwik-Fit, ATS or Mr. tyre for example. Some companies are mobile tyre fitters which may be the best solution if you shop online for one that is local to you.

Sorry Tango but bailey do balance the wheels. They think a lot about caravan stability.
Thanks Tom
We have taken a couple of things from under the bed and put them over the wheels. It's a little better but not perfect.
I'm definitely going to get the wheels balanced though. We had a Caravan for 11 years before getting the Motorhome and have never considered having the wheels balanced because it's never been an issue.

Maybe so but the OP didn't say that the caravan in question was a Bailey, they said it was a Coachman Amara which I know for fact having owned two myself that they are not balanced at the factory in Hull prior to being dispatched to their corresponding dealers.
If it was a Bailey caravan the OP was referring to then you would have had a valid point.
