For purely company car tax reasons I have the above car., the very thirsty Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (mpg 31......). The max tow weight is stated as 1500kg. We are now looking at our first caravan for me, Mrs and hound - how the hell do you choose?? Confused by the 85% rule, what weight can I tow? The salesman at a local dealer said ignore the 85% it's a 30 year old caravan club guideline which is no longer relevant.....but then as I was looking at second hand he chose to ignore me anyway.....seen some nice examples but don't want to get carried away if they are too heavy for the car.......help.....
Hi
I also have PHEV as a company car, agree with you about the MPG, and also only got mine to save on Tax.
We have a Bailey Pegasus max weight around 1450 Kg, and it pulls it just about OK, but really struggles up any kind of incline, and is obviously even thirstier when towing, frequent fuel stops required due to the ridiculously small petrol tank.
Luckily we also have a Ssangyong Korando that we use most of the time when towing.
In my honest opinion I would try to go for a caravan around 1300 Kg max weight
Good luck
Garry
Hmmm thanks Garry, love to find the bloke who gets the advertised mpg... So irrespective of the legal position the underpowered car will restrict my choice anyway. Good to know thank you. Any recommendations for 1300kg caravans??
Not sure what you are looking for budget or age wise, but plenty of vans around 1300Kg in the early year 2000's
I towed a compass 4 berth for my niece recently it weighs around the 1300Kg mark, and the PHEV had no problems at all, Journey was about 80 miles easily cruised at 60 mph on motorway, and dealt with a couple of hills OK
Not a bad tow car, very stable and smooth, just doesn't like steep hills very much !
Whereabouts are you based? If anywhere near East Yorkshire you are welcome to try my car with the Bailey on the back
Very kind thank you. I get to Hull very very regularly with work, so would love to see what it's like. Not sure how I send a private message on here though?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I've seen these PHEVs towing what I'd call fairly heavy vans e.g coachman VIP ,and wondered if they could really cope with that kind of weight .
Not so sure myself , I like to stick as close as possible to the 85% rule.

I have just read a post that contained an email address, it was for example. Bill Jones at tiscali.com. Straight forward to work out. See it all the time on here
Yes the PHEV will tow, there are various reviews on line from reputable sources. I think the issue is not the 1500kg limit, it's the lack of power to pull anything heavy up hill.....found a few lighter caravans so there are options.......managed to get the mpg over 32 yesterday.........if this was a private purchase I would be looking at the trade descriptions act.......
Wow! I have a 2011 2.3 D-ID GX4 outlander and in warm weather get 45mpg. Again nothing like Mitsubishi claim but not as bad as the PHEV. I tow 1600kg which is 87% of MIS
