Hi..
Recently bought a Brand new Skoda Octavia Scout Estate 4x4..

Now the question I ask you Guys... is, Would you Tow in 4x4 Mode... This is the first 4x4 I have ever had... So I am unsure.. Off to France for our Annual Holiday Shortly.. Not Towed with the New Car yet...so just wondered if you Guys could help me out here and give me some advice..

Is it not 'auto' 4 x 4, that is it only goes into 4 x 4 mode when necessry?

It will drive in normal 2wd virtually all the time, you wont even know its gone into 4wd unless the front wheels loose traction, it changes automatically in a split second without any driver input, and no buttons to press

You don't need to on any Skoda 4x4 only that you should never get stuck, fitting all season tyres also helps
Plus they have a heavier towing capacity

None of the above are a 4x4 as in the off road 4x4.
And most of them have road tyre's fitted and would stop at the first sign of any wet grass or mud !!!!

currently on my 2nd octavia scout.and they do not stop at the first sign of wet grass,mine does not anyway,you can't compare a scout with a discovery,1 is a very reliable economical car,60 + mpg and the other is a tractor !!!!

thats why i said 4x4 off road.

Toyota land cruiser
Shogun
Jeep
Land rover
etc
And if the above do not have the right tyres etc fitted will fail off road.

Toyota rav
Land rover freelander
Skoda 4x4
Are a totally diferant 4x4

People that dont know the differance, will expect the same performance from both and it ant going to happen.


As for the discovery tractor, Mines very economincal 36 mpg on motorway without caravan, and wind up my back side going down hill

Yawn!!

Funny but my Yeti 4x4 seems to cope very well with mud, wet grass, and rocky tracks when I take it green laning on it's standard ROAD tyres.

Perhaps it is about time you stopped being a Luddite.

At just over half of the Discovery towing weight, the Scout is not really a 4X4 in the popular sense of the word, but a very competent estate version of the Octavia.

If you need 3500kg towing weight then there are not that many vehicles around that will do it, but at 1700kg towing weight (Parkers figures) the Scout will appeal to many tuggers.

I don't know how the towing weight is affected by the car being fully loaded, I couldn't find that information online.

The car handbook should explain how the 4x4 system operates.
Our Sorento has similar set up and was excellent in snow.
For serious off road stuff we found an old S3 Landie then a Range Rover classic with mud tyres was pretty good! Dis get them stuck on 4x4 pplay days though!

The point am trying to make is.
People think that a 4x4 estate car, Suv, will do the same job as a big off road 4x4.
Even they get well stuck if they go off road with standard equipment.
I have towed out range rovers, disco etc because they use normal road tyres and expect to go anywhere. And they don't.
(And Bob said you need correct tyres for the job)

As for greenlaning the best car i have ever seen on a lane was a 2cv. I said no way will that get anywhere, how wrong was i lol. If it got stuck they got out and lifted it out the ruts. Some where even converted to 4x4.

And each year you see cars on the MCC Edinburgh trail, from vw beatle, ford escort, BMW 320 etc all on green lanes.
Just goes to show you dont always need a 4x4

Yea i have got a disco, dont compare that with the defender off road or the sers 1, and nowhere near the tom cat mk1 in the garage, but that is a animal in it's own right.

As for Skoda, Sorento etc, all are very capable cars
