Hi, I've recently purchase a second hand Daxara 127 and was hoping to be able to carry 2 bikes on my Maxxraxx towbar mounted rack. I've just checked the clearance recommendations on Maxxraxx and it recommends 925mm between centre of towball and front of trailer. When I've measured the trailer the distance is only around 630mm. So what I'm wondering is it possible (legal) to replace the drawbar will a longer section to gain the clearance required and if so has anyone done this? Thanks

does maxxraxx not have an additional section that increases the height of the bikes on the rack? not legal to alter tow bar on car but on trailer not an issue.

Yes they have a height extension which I'll probably need anyway to clear jockey wheel but it was more the distance between the front of the trailer and the bikes and I wasn't sure if I could modify the trailer to extend this. Didn't want to buy the height extension if I would still have the clearance issue on turns.

If it is ok to extend this has anyone else done it and any guidance would be appreciated.

Being just a rudimentary box trailer without brakes and all the complications that brings I see no technical reason why not. And being a trailer then as a UK resident there are no legal implications that I can think of that would inhibit you doing so.

Thanks for the replies. I believe the existing drawbar is a 50 x 50 x 2mm box section. Is there a way to calculate the required section when increasing the length (in my case by 300mm)? I was thinking that if not then maybe going up a size anyway to say 3mm?

You need 625mm and you have 630mm, don't see the problem.

The info. that I got from Maxxraxx states a clearance of 925mm from the centre of towball to front of trailer, on that basis I need an additional 300mm

Could you cut the draw bar in the centre and use a length of 60 x 60 x 4 RHS as an extension sleeve?

That was a thought but then I wondered if it would be just as easy to replace the full length, my only concern was ensuring the correct thickness of the section. If using a sleeve I wasn't sure how to connect the sections?

Personally I would bolt the sleeve with four M12 x 80 bolts, two at each end, complete with nuts and washers.

Thanks for the fixing suggestion. One other proposal that I've had made was to possibly bolt another longer section of 50 x 50 on top of the existing and relocate the hitch onto this although I've not connected the trailer to the car yet so don't know if it sits level, nose down or backwards.

Take it to a local welding/fabrication company, simple job, and should take no longer than a hour or so to do, would free to do it but we are far to busy I work t even consider doing private work at present. (I'm a welder/fabricater by trade)

It's a good recommendation and since my last post I spoke to a local towbar installers who also manufacture trailers and posed the question to them to which they said to pop the trailer in and they'd have a look at the best way to do it. Like you say hopefully shouldn't take long and so cost should be minimal. I'm away for a couple of weeks from wed so will take it in after that and post some photos of the finished job. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Where are you from? Would say get them to cut the draw bar off completely and weld in a complet new length to the length you require. Just as quick as trying to put a section in, I it will be stronger than joining it to.

I'm from Durham. My first thought was to simply replace the entire length as its only held on with 2 bolts but then realised the locking mechanism for the tipping function is fixed to the drawbar at the front.
