Hi here is my review just before we changed to a VX insignia - See below. Loved our Antara. Missed it imensly whilst towing our van this yr with the insignia..
Vauxhall Antara 2.2 Ltr CDTI Exclusiv 4x4 62 Plate.
I have had this car now for three years and sadly in October 2015 have to change it, therefore I thought I would right this eulogy to it.
Before purchasing the car I read all the reviews as I normally do before purchasing a new car, mainly to gauge opinion and to get a feel of what the car is like, and I must admit after reading some and feeling horrified, and others which calmed this, I ordered my vehicle in white, and waited or the day of delivery.
Of course I was worried over the concerns of the dpf etc, the fuel consumption, etc, but carried on regardless as I need something heavy enough to tow the van.
So lets get it all out of the way.
THE BAD STUFF.
None, yes thats right None, well the fuel consumption is a bit dismal but what can you expect from a 2.2 ltr diesel hauling a 4x4 system around. So to the figures after just short of 32,000 Mls this is how it looks
Solo:-
Commuting – 35 Mpg
Around Town – 27 Mpg (Short trips)
Motorway – 43 Mpg (6th gear 70 mph)
Towing – Strangely going south (28 Mpg)
Returning North (26 Mpg) both over the same 300 mls and more or less same time period.
Over the past 32,000 miles I have had the front tyre changed, at approx. 15,000 mls, and the rears were changed due to punctures and new tyres being needed at Ł256.00 each inc of fitting. No spare as it has the tyre inflation kit, but I got a spare (16inch and a part worn tyre), although never used.
The Dpf (Diesel Particulate Filter), a lot of horror stories out there, but I have not had a problem with it a regeneration of the filter every 600mls or so, as it needs to burn off the soot deposits collected. Never had any warning lights on indeed, done any of the recommended travelling for 20 mins on the motorway in 3rd at 70 et etc..
Now to THE GOOD STUFF.
Brilliant yes that right Brilliant, what a car, Best I have ever had, sorry to see it go.
As a driver you have a good commanding position and view of the road, controls are all in good placed and well thought out, Drivers seat has all the normal controls (Manual on this version). Passengers also have good views of the roads with big windows in the rear with privacy glass included. Incidentally the rear eat also reclines to quite a good position with the parcel shelf removed. Load space is adequate considering the type of vehicle. The car holds the road exceptionally well due to the rear self-levelling suspension and traction and stability control systems.
Road noise depending on the surface of the road is again adequate considering the size of the tyres, Wind noise is also minimal as is the engine noise within the cabin. Steering again is excellent well balanced and precise (or at least I consider it to be).
Under the boot floor should you not have a spare wheel is ample storage for bits and pieces, and this is similar throughout the cabin, with a two large storage bins up front and large storage in each door and on the front seat backs, this model also has a hidden tray under the passenger seat.
Day to day the car is a pleasure to drive, with good performance and acceleration through all gears.
Towing over the last 3yrs has also been a pleasure, we tow a caravan at 1300 kgs fully loaded and you would not know its there, towing capacity is upto 2000kgs so any modern van would not be a problem. We have a witter towbar fitted with a weight of 150 kgs limit on the ball. The towbar and dedicated electrics were a doddle to fit in a about 45 mins, with electrics being a single plug underneath the rear right hand side. We have an Adria van so have the much longer drawbar which makes towing easier and more stable, one the van is connected the electronics of the car alter the traction and stability control, and having self-levelling rear suspension a drooping rear is not a problem. Acceleration and overtaking with the van in tow is also not a problem, with 0 – 50mph coming up in about 18 Second, and 50 – 60 mph a few seconds in 5th gear. Don’t use 6th much when towing.
So to sum up after three years what do I think, its well worth considering if you are hauling a twin or large single axle caravan. If you caravan all year round then ideal but if you are a few times a year over say 40 days then it leaves a large amount of time to run round, with a vehicle with a less than adequate fuel economy, would I have another one, without a shadow of doubt and suffer the fuel consumption.
When fuel was at Ł1.42/ ltr Ł10.00 of fuel lasted 50 mls commuting, now at about Ł1.07 Ł10.00 of fuel is 65 – 70 mls commuting.
I hope people find this helpful, don’t ask me what second hand prices are like I do not know and don’t want to know. I also don’t what criticism over any aspect of this as it is just my honest opinion of the vehicle of the last three years, and hope to offer some help to others.
