Now thinking of changing car to suv.
I am looking at the following Nissan X Trail, Ford Kuga,
Honda CRV, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
Any suggestions opinions faults or things to look out for.
Caravan is a Sterling Europa laden mass 1195
Thanks.

Do a quick search on this forum for the cars you have listed, there's been quite a lot of discussion on all of these in the past.

What sort of budget are you thinking of? If you can give us an idea of your budget it may help us guess which models might be available so we can advise on possible problems etc. As your caravan is fairly light any of these cars should tow it easily.

Thanks Rob and Tina.
Budget would be around 7K-8K. I know all four would tow van, but different people have different models of each.
If there are warnings for any to avoid its better to come from the people who own or have owned.

There's no substitute for personal experience is there?

I know that that sort of money will get you a 2008/9 Kuga or X Trail but I don't have any personal experience of either. We looked at the same models but we need an automatic so our choice was limited, we have now got a SsangYong Korando which is a similar size to a Kuga and £8000 would get you a 2012 model with 40k miles and quite a good spec, I don't know if that would be worth a look.

Something else I just thought of... Some of these cars are available as 2WD versions and sometimes advertisers do not make it clear if it is a 2WD or 4WD that they are selling, it may not be important to you but 4WD is always useful for muddy campsites.

I've only had it a couple of weeks and haven't had a chance to tow with it yet. When the car was launched in the UK SsangYong were very keen to promote it for towing so as our car was a demo car it had a Witter detachable tow bar fitted from new (saved me £500 or so) and it also has a full size alloy spare wheel instead of a can of foam. Ours also has a fancy built in sat nav which was another expensive option. Leather seats (heated on ours), sunroof, cruise control and loads of other bits I haven't had a chance to try out yet.

Practical Caravan ran a Korando as a long term test car so there are quite a few reports on them and they also did well in the tow car awards. The only negative I can see, which probably wouldn't be a problem for you, is the max 80kg noseweight. The kerbweight is 1747kg on ours with a max tow of 2000kg so it should tow our 1500kg without any problem. The biggest problem is finding one to go and look at. They have a 5 year warranty so most of them still have some manufacturers warranty left and have a main dealer service history as well.

Thankyou Rob
What you have done as the owner, is answered my questions. You have pointed costing to other makes and pointed the negative aspects.

We have recently traded in our CRV cdti which did 84K miles in seven years and was totally reliable, if rather dull to drive. As a towcar pulling a van similar in weight to yours, it was very stable, averaging 43mpg solo and 28mpg towing. For your money you would get a 2008/09 Cdti with approx. 70K or a 2009/10 iDtec with a higher mileage. All the CRV MK3s (2007-12) come with occasional 4 wheel drive.

The iDtec will be more economical (45+mpg) but has a DPF filter which may be problematic on higher mileage cars. The cdti has no DPF and is very reliable, but CRVs with this engine can suffer from clutch problems, which normally start around 70K miles, particularly those which have been towing caravans. Check on a test drive that the clutch isn't slipping.

If you are looking at a Mitsubishi Outlander of similar age check out the Citroen C-Crosser or Peugeot 4007, which are basically the same car but with   a bigger 2.2 PSA engine. You will get a newer, lower mileage one for your money as they have depreciated more quickly than the Mitsubishi.

Am biased obviously but I now have a dream of a car 2008 CRV, even mates who have updated to the new CRV's wish they had kept their Mk3's.
Mine has no DPF, has 110,400 on the clock, never heard of slipping clutches because of no DPF, not even on the CRV forum, do not disbelieve it though, had a 407 once that the clutch slipped on, but that had a DPF.
It is getting a treat this year, going to be garage serviced first time since 89,000, I do the oil and brakes and filters every May.

That said my workmate tows with a Sang Yong and swears by it.

Another work mate has a Range Rover he swears at it, he stopped towing with it as the AA towed it and the van more than he did. He loves the RR though.

It horses for courses, go look, test drive, and enjoy the one you like.

I didn't actually make that correlation.

The point I was making was that clutch problems with the cdti engine are well known, particular with the Civic and to a lesser extent the 7th Gen. Accord and CRV. I didn't realise mine was slipping until my son drove the car far more 'enthusiastically' than I did and many owners may not be aware if the car is driven gently. Many CRVs (including mine) also suffered with a squeaking clutch pedal, which was temporarily cured at each service by packing it with grease. Fortunately it was irritating but not defective.

You will have me listening out now

I drive it like I stole it, lovely thing to throw around, will though ask the garage I go to, to have a look and listen for me.

Cheers for the heads up.

We used to have a 2008 FRV with the cdti - the clutch pedal squeaked on that too! Think the torque of the 2.2 cdti was too much for the soft clutch in these if driven with gusto! We have a 2013 CRV now - 2.0 AWD petrol - would not recommend towing a van with one

Hi Haymat
When I decided to buy the Kuga spoke to plenty on different forums & in person, they all told me same to go for the 163bhp AWD & leave the 2WD alone, purchased a 60 plate Kuga & love it, it tows my 2011 Charisma effortlessly, only problem I have had up to now is DPF sensor, this done at local ford dealer at a cost of £175 ( they insisted on a diagnostic check even though AA gave me a printout saying this was the fault )
Hope you find what you're looking for
Regards Graham
