As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
You need to ask the Dutch. Most Dutch tow with petrol vehicles. Those with large caravans tow with large petrol suv's such as Audi Q5 or Kia Sorrento. For medium caravans VW Passat & similar are popular. Dutch caravanners get around. Right down to southern France & Spain etc.
Reason most Dutch private motorists drive petrol cars is that cars for private use are around £400pa road tax. Same car diesel is around £1400pa. It has always been thus. Reason is to allow lower pump price of diesel for commercial & business use without losing the extra tax revenue from petrol by making it tax unfavourable for private motorists to opt for diesel.
So just buy the petrol version of the diesel car you were considering & away you go. It will tow your caravan just fine. Your fuel costs will be higher for no tax adavantage. Less in fact.
We towed with petrol cars in the past, last was a Saab 9000 turbo. It was an excellent towcar but thirsty!
Very quick too!
Also towed with my Range Rover V8 on the odd occasion, fuel consumption not brilliant! Good stable tug!

Go on Grampian tell us
16 mpg ?
More like 10 - 12 mpg, i was running on LPG and filled up at the ASDA or Morrisons at Cribbs Causeway, a 100L tank with a max fill of 80L, Went to Perranporth and the following day on the way to Redruth we had to fillup again.
It did have a 4" lift and running the larger tyres in this picture..
Cannot remember the tyre size but it was a 4" lift.
I think the best our Range Rover did was 20mpg solo,it was a 3.5 efi.Great car though, really good off road.It was standard apart from mud tyres and steering, diff and sill guards.
Our Saab 900 turbo actually got down to 18mpg oon one occasion, that was towing in the alps.Van was 89 Abbey GTS 15 foot.
It had been working hard!

We tow a 1994 Compas Vantage 2 berth with a 2007 1.8 C4 Grand Picasso it does the job but needs working on hills, 22mpg towing, 30-42mpg depending where we go solo, we are considering getting a slightly larger diesel though.
Best petrol towcar we had was a 1998 Volvo V70 T5 auto, previous owner had tweaked it had 300 bhp and did 18mpg when towing, 25mpg solo. Worst was a 90bhp Picasso 2.0hdi just felt really underpowered.

We tow with a diesel V70 automatic of the same model, and get an average of 40mpg around town, solo. Towing our caravan, about the same, as we are normally doing a fairly long journey mainly on motorways or major roads. On a long journey solo it will do anything up to 50mpg.
Long ago we towed with a MK2 Cortina, and got no more than 25mpg from its 1500cc petrol engine.

To be honest i have been thinking of px the disco in for a ave milage Range Rover 4.2 V8 auto Supercharged Vogue SE.
On ave the disco local is around 22, as i only do short distance know days.
And towing 1800 is around the same on a good day.
So i would only take a hit when towing.
Still tossing a coin over it lmfao.
Mate of mine used to come up from london in his mk1 v8 to go laning up in Derbyshire, used to cost him over 200 in petrol for the weekend lol
