Just looking for some early advice here....

The wife's car is a leased car through the NHS, but it's not due for renewal / change until March...

It's not the 'tow car' of the household, but we were think of it to become the tow car.

As I've changed jobs and work away, I don't need a big car anymore (the current tow car), so was think of me just to get a small run about, and her car to be the now bigger 'family / tow car'..?

Thought?

What are their terms on fitting a towbar? Will you need to remove it and make good any repairs?

Is it a lease where you can purchase it at the end of the term? Are you likely to do that?

Her current car doesn't have a tow bar, so we'll have to cross that bridge when the day comes...

And she's said that this lease is where you hand it back at the end of the term and get another etc, none of this purchase at end etc...

I've always fitted tow bars to my lease cars without issue. Get agreement from the lease company and fit it. They usually ask you to use car specific electrics and leave the tow bar on the car when it goes back.

The tow bars are not really worth removing after 3 years, cost of removal is as much as it would sell for and then you need to keep the original crash bar which is removed during installation.

My wife had a car through the NHS.I know the previous car we had a Parrot hands free kit fitted, which they had to approve as it was done after market,on condition it was removed before handing the car back otherwise we would be charged for removal. The car had to go back as it was supplied, which to us seemed odd as the kit was a bonus for the next owner.
When we changed it we made sure to specify every option we wanted on the new one. A towbar was available, although it was not something we wanted.
Check with the lease company what their conditions are.The NHS runs the scheme but uses several finance companies, all with their own little quirks. We had the option to buy at the end of the agreement, the price was just under 2k less than a dealer price, we were tempted and flog it on private but it was finding the cash!

I have been with my current firm for 12 years, and the company car I drive is from VW Leasing, the car gets replaced every two years at around 60k miles.

The ideal scenario would be for the car to come with a factory fit towbar, as then the cost to me would be around £5 per month in additional tax, as the fitment of the towbar would slightly increase the retail value of the car, and would inturn increase the BIK rate.

But for some unexplained reason by the firm I work for the above is not an option.

So every two years I pay for a towbar to be fitted, so that's £400 and the car goes back with the towbar still fitted, and the crash bar goes in the boot on the day of return.

I keep the cost down a little by opting for Trailer only wiring 13pin, but the fitting has to be done by a VW approved fitter and must be dedicated electrics.

The irony is that the last car I had, the wiring was done fully, so would have been good for caravan as well.

I have just last month taken delivery of a new company car, and have not got around to having yet another new towbar fitted.

The wife's lease car is done through salary sacrifice.

We've since found out, that this can affect her pension, which is why we are thinking of going for a leased car where the payment comes off AFTER tax, NI etc...

Also, there seems to so companies at it, they maybe a better / cheaper deal out there now...

And as for mileage (Francias)? Are you saying you do 30k miles a year!? As we are currently limited to 9k (over 3 years) a year....

Yep 30k miles per year, my 2015 TDi BlueMotion Mk7 Golf had 65k business miles on it, when it went back last month, so in two years that was just over 30k miles per annum.

All cough, business miles of course at a claim back rate of 14ppm which works out well when your getting 55+ mpg.

The firm has around 100 vehicles in the fleet these days, so there is no flexibility for factory options unfortunately, although some years we do get to choose the colour, but even then it's a bit of a lucky dip.

Been out today looking at possible other makes of future lease cars, as the wife's current car is a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, it won't tow our 1500kg caravan...

So have narrowed it to the diesel Outlander, or the Honda C-RV so far...

And as for the term 'lease', what's better? PCP, or PCH..???

No idea what PCP or PCH is, I guess the company lease car that I drive is based on a totally different set up to what your on.

Nice that you get to choose the car type make model though, we don't get any car choice at all.

I think the op was talking about a company car rather than a personal contract purchase which isn't a leased car

Yep a friend of mine took on a 3 year leased car, when he landed what he thought was a decent job, visiting retailers in Blackpool and Preston, job ended ended after 12 months and he is now stuck with a car he can't afford.

There firm took on about 40 staff to cover the UK, they all needed a car to do the job, they could either use there own car, or go for a lease car, the areas were quite small, so not high mileage, 40p per mile or something was what the firm paid them for the first 10k miles then dropped to 25p or something after that, most choose to use there own cars, but a few had engines blow up, and gearbox's fail etc, so they were out of pocket as well.

To my mind if the job requires a car, then the company should provide it, and service it, without any financial risk to the employee.

Otherwise you might as well go self employed, or maybe I am missing something?

I think the wife's car is a 'contract hire' leased car, not a 'PCH' type lease....

Also, looking on the lease company's website, it has the box for you to choose to have a tow bar fitted....

WHat year is your outlander? Most can tow 1500kg so you may not need a different car.

That's lucky GCMS2012, if the lease company can arrange a factory fit towbar, then that will slightly increase the retail value of the car, as shown on the P11D document.

This is somthing I can only dream of, as the additional BIK tax to the user is only around £5 maybe less, in additional tax to pay each month, which is far better than having to fork out £400 every 2 years like I have to do, grrrrr!

It depends on the terms of the contract hire company but my employer has leased cars through VW Finance for several years. On my current and previous cars I've ordered the towbar as a dealer fitted option and on the agreement that it will remain on the vehicle at the end of the contract. It's never been an issue.
