Over the last 6 months theirs been a big debate on here regarding electric cars, loads of people scoffed and said they were no good they’ll never catch on, the range is poor you can’t tow anything with them and they’d never tow anything up our hills.

It was also said that they will never replace diesel powered trucks & buses.

Well here’s the 1st one from tesla

http://fortune.com/2017/11/20/inside-tesla-electric-semi-truck/

No doubt buses will follow & production is due to start in 2019.
So the ball’s rolling in the truck world, only a matter of time before all the other manufactures ramp up their efforts.

You can say they won’t meet demand, they’ll be too expensive, and the oil industry will block them. Some knowledgeable drivers will even say that they will be over length so will be no good in the UK.

But this is just the start as with everything new things get better, cheaper and more accessible couple this with the £400 million boost today in the budget for more charging stations.

I see Tesla cars every day now on my way to work, we’ve actually got 3 on my estate.

To me they are more common than a Skoda yeti

As you know there's been the long post, so why not just tag this on to that one.

And I have seen the footage of the truck, looks good can't see it taking off though. 😛

And how do we produce all this electricity? Ah yes. By creating even more emissions.

Don’t get me wrong the days of fossil fuel are numbered but electric vehicles will not be the mainstream.

Look to the Japanese for the future. They believe it’s hydrogen fuel cells and so do I.

Pollution caused by petrol/diesel vehicles is not even over the country it is worst in areas of high slow moving vehicle concentrations like cities & that is the cause of health problems to local residents.

So the argument that generating electricity to charge electric vehicles will cause equal pollution is invalid.

Electric vehicles are the future, they are coming. How quickly depends entirely on the technology. They are not there yet with range & charging points but they will be at some time in the future. Plenty of truck deliveries are local so ideal for electric trucks that can be charged every night. Remember milk floats? Electric buses seem logical enough for local services as well.

Odd how it is always Tesla that gets mentioned. I think I’ve seen one in the UK. Most popular EV in UK is Nissan Leaf. Quite a few around where I live. After that it’s the odd BMW & Renault Zoe.

The reason why it's tesla that gets mentioned is because they have brought a car out that type approved for towing.
Funny I've only seen 2 Nissan leafs, I've Seen quite a few BMW' s charging at the Trafford centre but I must see 5/6 at least Teslas a day that's not including the 2 parked outside my local train station

I guess most of us who post on here will be able to comfortably see out our caravanning days with diesel or perhaps turbo petrol without ever having to worry our grey heads about towing with an EV.

opensauce I'm still in my 40's so know the change will affect me, to be fair I'm hoping to get one as my next car...... but that will be a mega long shot as mines due up in 2019.
So probably still not up to speed then.

I think it must be areas, as Opensauce says. I have see a few Nissan Leafs, and a friend of mine has one, but I have yet to see a single Tesla, and have been deliberately looking out for them.

I would love to believe that battery powered was the future, but I have yet to be convinced. Local delivery vans certainly, and I do remember milk floats and bread vans in my area, but they all disappeared. We also had electric (trolley) buses at one time, but they disappeared too, more's the pity. Trams are coming back in some cities, and we could bring back trolley buses too, but I doubt we will.

We could also electrify all our rail lines, as was planned in the 1950s but didn't happen. Diesel engines still dominate our trains, both passenger and freight.

Colin

Yes, including the absolutely brand new ones recently purchased by GWR.

I have not seen a Tesla in my neck of the woods, the only one I have seen was a Taxi at Heathrow in September. Great looking car.

I am eagerly waiting for my E 4x4 pick up truck that will tow 3T for 250 miles, 450 miles solo, take me off road and be topped up in rural Devon. Not sure I will ever see that 🙁. It will happen, but not in my lifetime, so Diesel is still king. 😀👍

Having just recently bought a hybrid (not plug in) how they can fit in, especially in the cities but the EV's have a long way to go yet for most people especially those living in terrace houses with no where to plug them in or those that travel long distances.

Around my way I have only ever seen one Tesla (Model S) a few months ago and that has just recently been involved in the death of a cyclist who did not hear the car near him.

With my hybrid, when the roads are clear, it is a constant struggle making that decision as to drive it to get over 40mpg or to use the 300hp

Now or in the future, site owners will more than likely charge an extra £2.00 a night if you need to charge your electric tow car

Mike if they can build a truck that can tow full capacity for 500 miles, getting a pick up to tow 3 tonnes 250 miles should be a drop in the ocean, just boils down to cost, Tesla are actually releasing a pick up in the next few years as well.

I used to drive an electric milk float back in the day. As they increased the size of the rounds in order to reduce the number of milkmen they had to employ, the milk floats started running out of juice before the end of the round and had to be towed back to the depot by a petrol guzzling truck. Eventually they did away with the electric milk float and gave me the petrol guzzling truck.

So, how are these electric cars charged and how long does it take? I don't have off road parking at my house so I would either have to leave my car on a forecourt somewhere overnight , where it would be vulnerable to theft and vandalism and I would need another form of transport to go and collect it in the morning...or trail an electric cable from my house across the pavement to my car where it could be tripped over, vandalised, or even removed from my car and attached to a neighbours car in the dead of night. Then I wonder why my electric bill is sky high and my car never seems to be fully charged

Tesla have just finished installing the World's largest battery. Capacity is 100MWh - 100,000 kWh.

It will store energy produced by an Australian windfarm and power homes during down periods.

It has all been done within 100 days of signing the contract - as per the promise made by Elon Musk of Tesla.

I too worked as a milkman for a short while. My round was in a country area in Norfolk, and I had a Transit milkfloat because of the length of the round, but one day they gave me a new electric float to try, which was supposed to have larger and better batteries. It got about half way round! The other problem was that the start of my round was quite a way from the dairy yard, and the electric float only did 15mph! It was quite a while ago though.
