We have a Volvo V70 Diesel, 14 yrs and 220K miles new, and it hardly notices our tiny Rapido pop-top caravan, grossing around 950KG, on the back. So it's ideal, except that it's diesel and it won't last for ever; our needs have also changed and we can cope with something slightly smaller, but still an estate, pref. with level loading platform, no lip at the back end.

While there's a scrappage scheme I'm looking vaguely at new, which I never thought I'd do, but it might be good to move on from our dirty old diesel, even if the mpg is ridiculously good!

Has anyone tried the petrol Skoda Octavia 1.4 manual?
- Or can comment on other petrol estates, for towing?

I don't see us going for SUV's or 4WD, as most of the time we need the estate car to carry lots of things in.
Thanks for any help.

Don't touch a petrol skoda. My partners daughter was talked into buying a petrol fabia as she don't do big milage. I had a diesel fabia previously as a run about high 60 mpg. she was told 50 plus mpg out of a petrol easily. in reality 35 mpg and car has been back to skoda to get checked out, nothing wrong with it, my current run about is a 4x4 octavia estate scout returning 60 plus mpg , 140 bhp diesel

It might not run for ever, but regular servicing and no boy racer type driving and it easily has another 100k miles in it. I’d hang onto it for another couple of years as I think the whole fossil fuel car thing is in jeopardy as I can see massive incentives to get folk into these dreadful electric cars.

Not sure about what petrol car would be good but you will certainly notice a huge difference when towing compared to your current car.

If looking at new scrappage schemes aren’t always as good as they are made out to be. You might actually get a better deal on a pre registered with delivery mileage or a 6 month old one with a few thousand miles, both still carry balance of manufactures warranties. Do your homework and don’t jump at the first offer.

If you keep cars for a long while I would avoid a highly stressed 1.4 turbo petrol & go for diesel version. The anti diesel thing is largely hype so take advantage of that & get a good price for a new diesel. It will cost you less in fuel.

Have look at the Octavia Estate 4x4, plenty of load space and of course that extra grip on a muddy field. Mine is the 140, 2.0TDi, Euro 5 engine and it's had the VW emission software fix done, so lots of clean air from the exhaust!!!!!!!!!!!!
Towing around 33-37 mpg depending on road and around 65mpg solo.

I tow a Trigano Rubis 310 pop up (750kg) with a Fabia Skoda Estate. It has the 1.2 tsi engine and the 7 speed dsg auto gearbox.
Never had any problems, engine pulls really well and gearbox makes seamless changes.Copes easily with this weight of van.

That's interesting, thanks - that's not a lot different from our van in weight. Forgive my ignorance, is that a petrol or diesel Fabia? I've been looking with interest at Fabias, though not yet dome much about it, but note they seem to have excellent ratings from their owners.

Do you take your van into hilly areas with it?

And it's good to hear from another contented pop-up owner too

I've got no plans to change my V70 diesel. It's just nicely run in now with 166,000 on the clock, and it can carry all I want in the back while towing my caravan. Difficult to match it without spending a fortune, which I haven't got.

Colin

I have the 1.4 TSI as a taxi, its a 16 plate with the 150 bhp engine, average 43 mpg local and have seen 62 on long runs, and only £30 PA rfl the 1.4 fitted to the fabia was only around 90 bhp

I bought mine after being in several in Ibiza, most where the 7 gear DSG versions , mine is 6 manual

If and when I do change my Volvo for something else it would probably be a Yeti, but it would have to be a diesel. The lack of a torque converter puts me off a bit though. Still way too pricey for me too. Then again, with all the current fuss about diesels, the prices may come down. Not good for anyone who owns one though.

Plenty of people tow with the DSG Yeti and I have seen no reports of problems.

Probably just me being paranoid. Heard a few bad reports about the DSG box, and I find the torque converter so useful when pulling away with a load uphill. I'll probably end up trying one at some point, but the Yeti is still way out of my price range. £2,000 + whatever I can get for my current car is usually my max. I never borrow to buy, always cash. My Volvo cost me around £2,500, and I've had it over 8 years now. It's 18 years old next month.

I had two DSG Audis.

After my experience of the second I will never go near them again.

The only bonus was it failed just before Christmas so I had a courtesy car to do a 1200 miles holiday trip, rather than my own car!

The TSI engines are petrol units with a turbo. The next size up is the 1.4TSI and then the 1.8. This is our second year with the van and have towed mainly in the south and middle of the country with one trip up north. Never had any problems with hills, live at the top of a fairly long steep hill.
Had the car prior to getting the caravan so opted for the lightest van we could afford.
If I upgraded I would go for a car with the 1.8 TSI engine. Would not touch a modern diesel engine with all the problems they have.

Keith
