Hi. Does anyone tow with a Ford Ranger? We’ve ordered a new one and dealer can’t seem to help with questions about electrics. We have been told the standard fit tow bar socket although 13 pin doesn’t have the 12 pins active needed to charge and run fridge. Also trying to find out if there are problems running led lights on caravan, another thing we’ve been told is a problem
Is the dealer fitting it or do they get a towbar fitter in to do the job, if you specify it needs the full electric pack to charge a battery or run a fridge then they should have no issues doing that.
Is the towbar being fitted at the factory or is it a dealer fit? Factory fit is a better option on a Ford due to the added bonus of the Trailer stability function. (This is only available from the factory because of a different ABS unit being fitted)
Dealer fit usually means the dealer ringing a local towbar fitter to fit an aftermarket towbar and electrics, which is perfectly fine as long as the kit is a VSK (Vehicle Specific kit) and is coded to the car to give you the automatic shut off of reversing sensors and fog light etc while towing.
Either way, it will be a 13pin socket (EU regulations) and the indicator fail warning will function as it's a legal requirement now.
Ford's Body Control Modules have a narrow band to detect faults on the trailer lighting by monitoring resistance so if you plug your LED trailer in and the lights don't work straight away add resistors to the trailer LEDs to bring the resistance up. Somebody on here may know more about the values needed. Be warned if the BCM shuts down too many times it will lock out and will need recoding by Ford or replacing.
The Ford Ranger is a great tow car.
Hope this helps?

We've had a towbar fitted on our ranger and it has the 13 pin electrics but it was an outside company that came in not the Ford Garage. Check it has the alko towball if you are towing a caravan
I Tow with a 2017 ranger fitted with a factory fit towbar, when I took delivery I was disappointed to find out that when towing the fridge & battery charge was not working,
a chap on the ford ranger group on Facebook pointed me toward a Ford technical service bulletin which I took to my dealers
They ordered a small wiring loom that fits somewhere under the passenger seat & now it all works as it should, (all FOC)
However!
I have a new Ranger on order & due in August & I noticed a note on the ford website when choosing the factory fit towbar that it will not be fully wired (or words to that effect)
My dealer has said he will swap the extra loom over from the old one provided it fits,
Hi all,
Just joined and was browsing your conversation.
I am considering a new Ford Ranger for leisure use and wondered if you had encountered any issues other than electrics (my swift has LEDs so need to check)
There's a few horror stories around on various forums about leaf spring suspension and caravan warranty concerns. Also wondering if the factory towbar is a bit high and has anyone had to lower for stable towing.
Many thanks in advance
Neil
Get a decent specialist tow bar fitter to fit your tow bar, They know more about tow bars and fitting them than any dealer will ever know, When I had my Kuga tow bar fitted the fitter told me they have lost count of all the Kuga tow bars they have done he said its in the high hundreds or thousands by now ,and never had a single problem or come back. There is no such thing as a factory fitted tow bar, dose any one seriously think they are going to stop or slow down an assembly line to fit a tow bar,its will never happen, I have worked in car factories and know that its all about getting cars off the assembly line.
I'm afraid there is such a thing as factory fitted tow bars, as mine was!
Does.
------------- XVI yes?

I contacted Elddis & got an email back saying I wouldn’t have any issues with warranty while towing with the Ranger,
My twin axle sits nice & level with the “factory fitted” towbar,
I have no proof (or care) where the towbar was fitted but I know for certain Rangers are shipped in to the UK with them fitted if chosen as an option
