Just thought I would share this with you guys, a work colleague who shares my office drives a Audi Q3 as his company car, he always religiously fills up at Sainsbury’s however since his wife joined Costco he thought he would give them a try as it was a bit cheaper.

2 Days after he filled up for the 1st time at costco his car went into limp mode and had to be recovered into Audi, the fault was diagnosed as being High concentrate bio fuel and water. The bill

Just shy of £5000…….ouch

My company and the lease company have been arguing the toss for about 6 weeks over who's coping the bill; well we lost so I guess we won’t be resigning with them in the future.

What percentage of bio is the fuel supplied by Costco?

Most modern diesel engines state no more than 5%.

The diesel fuel he bought will have contained no more than 5% bio, as that is the legal standard, no matter where it is bought from.
In your companies situation I would want to see the how they have come up with that "explanation", and their full analysis. I would also be chasing Sainsbury's for their explanation.

High concentration of H2O.

This can occur if the fuel tank is kept at a low level, and by filling a small amount, instead of filling.

Now we have warmer weather, condensation can build up in the fuel tank.

My problem with the 'tug' (2 litre TDCI engine) was also due filling with Supermarket diesel.

Going into 'Limp Home Mode' several times, I decided to get it checked. (Yes, I reset it with the assistance of my OBD2 Diagnostic Reader)

After having a replacement actuator, turbo unit, and 4 injectors, I decided to use BP Ultimate.

What a difference.

Just saying.

Llanidavies he’s had no issue at Sainsbury’s it’s the Costco fuel that it’s failed with and that’s the fuel that was tested.

As for the % I don’t know what it is but Audi will are sending a report, funny the 1st time I used Costco fuel my engine management light came on within 10 mins of fueling up, its never been on since and I regularly use Costco

If the fuel was at fault surely it would have effected a lot of other vehicles that have been using it.
If that was the case, word gets around so quick these days that it would soon become common knowledge with lots of claims going in, As happened with Shell a few years ago.
I have worked on diesels that have had water contamination in the fuel. The fuel was drained off the fuel system was then purged with fresh diesel and new filter, that is all that was required. For £ 5000 worth of damage to be caused by water in the fuel I would need to see proof of the actual damaged parts.

Good point dimbles.

Main dealers love to make money on cars.

It is not uncommon for some to 'replace' a number of items, rather than ACTUALLY determine what is defective.

"This, That, and The Other needed replacing" is a well used excuse.

After all, they're the EXPERTS

It may well of effected other cars, our place are going to speak to Costco but it was actually fill up 2 months ago... it’s been sat in Audi since.

I agree with changing parts, I think everything to do with the fuel system is being changed.
The same thing happened to a girl from our head office last year in a merc but she only used a certain shell station..... who wasn’t interested. Hers only cost £1100.

It’s a huge amount of money for something that should never happen. If this was my cost I’d be going fe#€%n mental

Last month I also experienced the engine going into limp mode after filling up at supermarket. Ford Focus 1.6tdci with 38,000 miles on the clock.
I always fill up at our local BP station but was up north and supermarket was one of few options for fuel.

I ended up having to renew acuator, turbo and associated pipe work etc. Not done by a greedy Ford dealer but my son in laws own garage, who have always serviced the car.
Probably coincidence and I never put it down to supermarket fuel until reading this post?

I'm not convinced there is any difference in supermarket fuel and standard branded fuel. It's all made to the same minimum specification in the same refineries. You can see the branded and unbranded vehicles heading in and out to distribute. If the branded fuel was anything better you can bet it would be heavily advertised by the brands. As is - radio silence.

The only fuel that is claimed better is the high octane premium fuels like Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate with added detergents and stabilisers. These advertise benefits over normal fuel which must have some basis or the advertising agency would have cashed in some big fines already.

You can get bad fuel from anywhere, unfortunately as pointed out above, dealerships default to replacing the full fuel system to 'maintain warranty' hence the exorbitant bills. Comes down to they don't want a warranty claim 12 months later for failed parts which could have been damaged by the fuel issue so they replace it all and hand over the juicy bill. Doesn't hurt there bottom line at £120 hour labour either.

I do 30k+ mostly business miles each year in a VW Golf 1.6 TDi and always fill up at the cheapest supermarket that I can find, usually Sainsbury's in my region.

It would be rude not to at a claim back rate of 14ppm.

Never had a problem with supermarket fuel in over 32 years of doing that kind of mileage.

We mostly use Sainsburys to fill up our diesel, and often see the local Police filling up there too, the Derbyshire Police head office is just down the road, and Sainsburys appear to be on contract to them for all their fuel needs.

If Sainsburys fuel was so bad, then surely the emergency services, and indeed the traffic police would know better than to use it?

I certainly wouldn't have accepted a £5k bill on the back of what a dealer says.

Unfortunately as its a lease car you have no choice as its the lease company's car.

My Audi has now done 33k miles in 18 months. I used to buy Sainsburys fuel but when Costco opened their fuel station about 9 months ago I swapped to their fuel - cheaper and also the 'advanced' stuff as that is all they sell. No problems with either fuel except that I'm getting more mpg ( 10%)from the Costco diesel - part of the increase is probably down to the increased miles on the engine.

I don’t for 1 minute think the problem is linked to Sainsbury’s fuel as he’d been using that since the car was new 2 years ago and 70k ago,
The problem happened with 100 miles of filling up at Costco.

Davey what can you do? The cars in Audi’s garage it’s tied to a warranty period and it’s a lease car, I’ve absolutely no doubt they are going over the top changing everything that’s linked to fuel.
And I can assure you our place wouldn’t go down without a fight, I’m sure we have around 200 lease vehicles in the UK from this company, Then we have vehicles in another 9 + countries

Jaiash that’s what Costco promote that their fuel is better than the norm and better for your engine, it’s all over the pumps.

"Davey what can you do?"

My post explains there is jack all you can do - its one of the risks of a lease car - you don't own it.

If something big goes wrong which isn't covered by warranty you get the bill.

I'm sure however the company directors who lease these cars are fully aware of the risk when making the decision to lease rather than own the vehicles.

They will also be able to afford the lawyers to begin any legal action they deem appropriate.

For individuals who lease this is not the case.
