Hi guys newbie here .Im new to camping so i was wondering what in your opinion is the best older ..around 2010-2015 towing car .The annual milage will be around 20.000 mark .It will be our main car.
thanks
George
It depends what you are thinking of towing. If it's just a camping trailer most cars would be suitable, if you need to tow a large caravan you will need a heavier more powerful car.
How many seats do you need?
Do you want manual or auto?
If you are thinking of a caravan do you have a B+E licence?
Diesels generally are better for towing but a petrol car would be fine for a camping trailer, diesel may not be so good for everyday use if you only do short journeys.
Come back with some more information and we'll see what we can come up with.
Hi Rob
my licence is upto date .Milage on a normal week will be between 100 /140 per week we only need the 2 seats. As for man or auto dont mind i always thought auto were no good to tow with.We are looking for a 5/6 berth caravan not folding camper
cheers
George
What do you mean by "my licence is up to date"? Have you got B+E on your licence?
If you want to tow a 5/6 berth caravan it will be quite heavy so you will need a heavy tow car which will probably mean that you need B+E.
Auto diesels make good tow cars.
Depending on what you want to tow something like a Mondeo might do the job but you may need to go heavier eg a Kuga/Sportage size.
There's lots of advice on the forum about suitable tow cars but you need to know what your licence allows you to drive.
well ive had my licence for about 30 years now .i cant check as its been sent away for something .I was looking at aRange rover ive heard they are not the best on fuel or reliability
If your licence goes back that far you would have B+E so you are not restricted to 3500kg so you should be able to find a suitable outfit.
Range Rover has never been a cheap option in my mind but some people love them.
Your choice of car depends on a great extent on the weight of the caravan you intend to get, ideally the max weight (MTPLM) of the caravan should be around 85% of the kerbweight of the towcar unless the max tow weight of the car is less than this. Have a look at Parkers car specs for an idea of car specs and weights.
Have a Google or look on this forum for the 85% guideline, there's also lots of information on the Caravan Club website.
Kia Sportage or Hyundai Tucson make good tow cars, and they are fairly high. I have a 2007 Tucson diesel automatic, and it tows a treat. Far from autos being "no good to tow with", they are in fact excellent, especially those with conventional torque converters. Personally, like many others, I wouldn't want to tow with a manual, as it's too much like hard work, and autos are much smoother with no pause during gear changes.
First of all though you need to work out what you intend to tow. Until you know that you can't possibly work out what you want to tow it with.
Just to chip in on auto or manual, there is overwhelming preference for auto as a tow car on this forum as indicated on previous posts. Most say once you try auto you will never change.I als fit into that category.
I drive a 184ps 2 litre diesel Seat Alhambra auto (DSG). It is excellent.
May be a little over the top for 2 people, but you'll NEVER be short of space to carry all kinds of stuff you didn't know you needed. Towing it gets 25-28mpg and solo it gets around 45mpg. It is basically a VW so has that reliability assurance.
We have a 6 berth Sterling Eccles (MIRO 1367kg) and the car pulls the caravan with ease.
Don't forget to use an outfit match tool to ensure your chosen car can pull your chosen caravan. I use https://towcar.info/GB/outfitmatch.php
