Firstly you need to know the kerbweight of your car and the max tow weight, some Focus models have a very low towing allownce.

Secondly you need to know the max weight of your caravan. When you have these figures you'll be able to see if it would be a legal match.

You said the caravan was 982 kg before being loaded, you need to know the max weight (MTPLM) of the caravan to work out if it is a safe and legal match.

You also need to know the max towing limit of your car, it may be quite low. The figures should be in the car handbook or on the V5. If you can't find the figures come back with the full car details, year, model, gearbox etc and we may be able to look it up.

If you want constructive advice from members then you need to comply with the information they need to know. It's a waste of time posting further until you can confirm the MTPLM (laden weight) of the caravan which is important for providing an accurate match. The figure you are quoting 982 kgs. is the MIRO which is the weight when it leaves the factory so no use whatsoever in the calculation.

Sorry, but why have you asked the original question if you've already bought the car and caravan and are happy with the combination?

It may Tow lovely but you could be breaking the law if the weights don't add up and your insurance company could walk away from you if you have to claim

wayn0099, if replies are a little blunt (from folks genuinely trying to be helpful!), it's because you have firmly put the cart before the horse! Most folks check suitability BEFORE buying car and/or caravan, and certainly don't venture out on the public highway when they haven't got a clue as to legality/safety or otherwise!
To be brutally honest, rightly or wrongly you are coming across as the sort of owner that ends up upside down in a ditch, brings shed loads of otherwise unwarranted attention to caravanners in general, and brings about changes in legislation that have more effect on those of us who go about things in a more responsible manner than those that go off gung ho regardless! So perhaps you can see why folks are a little less than impressed!

Having slapped your wrist, here's the helpful bit, go to this web site and enter your car and caravan details, it will give you chapter and verse on your outfit.

You appear to be OK with your set up, but that's luck not judgement!

I have been caravaning for over 15 years I was just asking the question.. and for your information I have never ditched a caravan and I'm not about too both units are compatible in all areas and I've phoned my insurance company and my caravan insurance company and they are fine with it all ... it's only the idiots how tow twin axles with there range rivers who decide to ditch there vans doing 75mph down the motorway thinking there better than everybody else

Ahh, OK. You have the best possible car and caravan combination in the world and we're all deeply envious. Congratulations. I think that's the answer you're looking for.

Like what does a car insurance company know about a caravan being a match! Doh!

XVI yes?

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
