Looking at buying a VW Tiguan 2lt TDi 2WD Manual, 2015 plate, to be fair it will be my Son’s (35) motor, but I will be on the insurance, and I only intend to use it for our annual trip to France, firstly for towing my trailer, but later a caravan.

Whilst I am using the Tiguan for France, my Son will have the use of my company car, which for various reasons is not practical to have a tow bar fitted.

I actually prefer the body design of this model of Tiguan, I think there was a body change in 2016 which gave some aggressive lines to the body, these later models also command a premium price.

I am just starting my research and was wondering if there are any major issues with the model I am interested in.

I see that the model I am interested in uses Add-blue, no problem with that.

Just any views on the 2015 Tiguan would be appreciated.

The research I did when picking a diesel for towing was that Add blue would work out to be an expensive additional cost. I thankfully chose a diesel that did not require any additives.

The only way AdBlue could be described as expensive is if you do a high mileage.

It costs less than £20 for 20ltr. Not expensive in my book.

Completely agree, Adblue runnning costs are minimal and really not worth worrying about in that respect. I've spent about £35 on it in 20,000 miles.

Adblue is also often essential for some cars to meet Euro 6 standards, so if you want to get closer to guarding your car against potential future Low Emission zone charges and the like an Ablue car is more likely

Back to the topic, sorry, can't help you with personal experience of the Tiguan but I've heard nothing but positives about them

Cheers

Ian

Thank's I thought that about adblue not being an issue, the car will not be doing a high annual mileage say 20k or so, apart from the 3000 mile trip over to France each year, did that in a 2019 plate 3 Pot Petrol 1.5lt!Kuga last July, and it cost me a fortune in petrol.

Diesel is still cheaper than Petrol in France, so it's a double whammy on fuel costs in a good way, although I hear that may be set to change, and be the reverse as they try to push Diesel's of the road, but that will be in the long term, so the Diesel thing is not really bothering me, it's all about the real world here and now economics for me at the moment.

AdBlue is cheaper in France too - if you need any - Leclerc filling stations on a pump. I had an Audi A6 0n of the first with the AdBlue system - have to say it was only 7000miles per 15litres.
I now have a Q5 - much the same engine and it is much better - 10litres over 18k miles.

My only comment would be that if you're looking at a 2WD Tiguan, why not a Passat estate instead? It has exactly the same engines, a bigger boot and is just as capable.

Whichever you go for, a full service history is essential (the engines don't thrive on neglect)! But provided it has one, high mileage shouldn't be an issue. No other concerns at all based on my own experiences.

Personally I would say that the Tiguan offers a better drivers position over the Passat, I just prefer that elevated seat that SUV’s provide.

Also I would go for the Skoda Superb over the Passat, a lot more car for a lot less money, with basically the same mechanics under the bonnet.

In fact I do need to have a look at the Skoda SUV’s, there is sure to be an equivalent to the Tiguan for less money, I don’t care about the badge, a car is a car at the end of the day.

That might be true Bessie, but the bank of mum & dad, will be having a significant input , if all goes ahead, also I need to find out what the car policy is with the current firm, I was TUPED back in March, and have not yet been told what car we get, let alone the company car policy.

Spent March on garden leave, and then since April been on furlough, whilst on furlough access to works comms are prohibited.

Although I am expecting to return to work in August, strange old times indeed.

Neighbours daughter has a Skoda SUV, nice car. I think its a Karoc. Bigger one is a Kodiak.
My brother in law has a Superb estate 2.0 diesel. Its a big car well equipped and finished. They have a dog so room for her travel box in the boot and his golf bats.Reliable cars popular with taxi drivers.
You could probably get your camping kit in one with seats down and no trailer.

Well 664DaveS, you might have a point, we went to Frejus June/July last year using just the Ford Kuga and a Kamei Husky XXL roofbox (600lt).

To be fair the car was rammed, and not in a good state when it was returned, being a firms car it could take more than a privately owed one.

The Skoda Superb estate is a huge car, and would probably hold more than either the Tiguan or Kuga.

Not only that the Skoda Superb is a very cheap used buy, will run that one by my Son, but you know what these young ones are like, very brand aware.

They seem to do very well in reliability. The first responders in our area use Skoda estates, some police forces do too.

The Superb estate has more room inside than our Santa Fe, but we like the SUV for towing. No kids or dog so more than enough room. The dog box fits in when we look after her! I don't play Golf.

If I were in the market I would buy Skoda or SEAT over a VW or Audi , same running gear but better value for money.

Neighbour has a SEAT as his company car, it replaced a VW Golf. Nice looking car.Probably a fair bit cheaper.

This calls for the bread analogy

The Skoda Superb is a bit like a low-cost loaf of sliced bread in a supermarket. Really nothing wrong with it at all, absolutely fine to have for breakfast in the morning but also, nothing really to make you go "mm, this is nice".

The Passat is a bit more like the fresh crusty loaf in the bakery section of the same supermarket. It's made with the same ingredients and offers the same nutritional value, and there's no rational reason why you should pay more for it. But some people do - myself included -because it's just that bit nicer somehow.

We've had both the Passat and Skoda as company fleet cars and the VW has slightly nicer plastics, more comfortable seats and I think that it's better soundproofed. None of these things make any difference to reliability or running costs, but they matter to me because I spend some days of my life practically living in the damn things. Whether they matter to you is entirely down to personal preference.

I haven't driven the SUVs but would imagine that the same applies.

We will stay with Korean as we have had good service and reliability.
Our Santa Fe is coming up to 4 now. There is a little corrosion on one alloy wheel, bit of lacquer peel on others.

Took it in, they had a look and are going to replace them!

I am surprised they didn't just have them refurbished, must be cheaper.
No complaints from us.

Our previous Sorrento had the same, corrosion where wheel weights were, again they replaced all 4 on 3 year old car. Plus a rear boot badge which was faded!

JLR have just opened a new showroom opposite Salop leisure at Shrewsbury. I called in and had a look at new Defender as they had 3 long wheel base models.
Its huge! Good ground clearance and nice interior.

Like most LR expensive ! I do like big Range Rover though!
