Can anyone recommend a lightweight (max gross weight 750kg) caravan or trailer tent please? We need a 2 berth van but because the other half doesn't have cat B+E on their licence and the max gross weight of my Land Rover that will be towing it is 3500kg we are limited to 750kg max trailer weight.
For got to ask, would a rigid caravan be better or a folding caravan/trailer tent
Many thanks.

I have a Defender 130 crew cab pickup. Plated unladen weight is 2100kg, max gross weight 3500kg.

Edit: The actual weight of the vehicle is the Kerb weight plus the weight of; the winch and winch bumper, A-bar and spotlights, full length roof rack and light bar, 2nd spare wheel, Dixon-Bate ball and pin tow hitch, NATO tow hitch, diff guards, sump guard, LPG system and coupled brake system. I work on the assumption that this adds 250kg to the kerb weight (I am sure it is actually slightly less than this) which gives me a 1000kg payload capacity with myself and a similar sized passenger.

If you go for a trailer tent then the world is your oyster as they would be well within your weight limit usually around 350 kg, if you have to pack up wet you will need somewhere to dry it out when you get home.

Most folding campers will be over weight usually nearer 1000kg+, there might be some really old ones out there that weigh 750kg or less but you will still need to dry it out.

There maybe some folding caravans out there like an old Esterelle within weight.

Lightweight caravans, there are some like the Freedoms or some very old ones like 30yr old Sprites that would most probably fit the bill.

No, Maximum towing weights for driving licence restrictions are maximum plated weights, not actual weights. A person with B entitlement on their licence can tow a trailer with a maximum gross weight of 750kg behind a vehicle with a max gross weight of 3500kg. OR, they can tow a trailer over 750kg provided that the combined maximum gross weight of the towing vehicle and the maximum gross weight of the trailer do not exceed 3500kg.

Thank you, am I right in assuming that a trailer tent would give me a lot more space than a similar weight caravan? Do they come with cooking or toilet facilities? Forgive my ignorance, but I am more familiar with campervans and know next to nothing about caravans or trailer tents.

Trailer tent will give you a lot more room as the beds fold out from the trailer giving you 2 double beds and the trailer in the middle, then you will have an awning to put up which will be about 12ft long ( beds and trailer) there are also different depths of awning, if you are just doing an overnighter with some you don't have to put the awning up, the only downside is it can take 2-3 hours to put the whole thing up, some have kitchens inside trailer others are a separate unit that you detach from the trailer and stand in the awning. Only folding campers have inside toilets and wash basins and they will be too heavy as stated in my last post.

Have a look at blueskyholdings.co.uk it's full of info.

you have got it all wrong, your defender doesnt weigh anywhere near the weight you think it does, its not about the 3500kg plated weight as you have claimed, but to be honest i havent got a clue where you got that figure from, other than 3500kgs is the max a person can tow on their licenceif they havent taken a test, so that car +trailer in this case yours weighs approx 2100 kgs leaving you with 1400kgs for a trailer

Have a look at Pennine Countryman or Fiesta folding camper. They are at the smaller end of the range and are lighter. Mine has cooker hob, fridge and sink. Some have a toilet.   Mine fits in my garage.

The newer units have a different fabric that dries quicker and gas struts which make it easier to put up.   I manage mine on my own. If I have to pack it away wet, it will dry in about an hour, with some wind, when I get home. I have a separate awning that gives me lots of extra space which I use if away for 3+ nights.

The downside I find is that camping in the winter is more difficult because the weather is less likely to provide opportunity for you to get it dry.

We have a Trigano Rubis 310.It is a pop up roof caravan. The newer version is called a Trigano Silver. Ours is 750kg max gross weight. We have used it for the last 6yrs and have found it meets our needs.

A Riva Dandy is another option of folding camper/caravan. Uses insulated PVC similar to curtain sided lorry material instead of tent. Very rugged, warm in winter and can be packed away wet and left wet until you use it again.

Less well equipped than the folding campers but much more robust. Have quite a lot of wooden walls, proper caravan windows and door.

These come in 3 basic sizes.
Rear entry types 500kg loaded 14ft long opened, 4 berth
Side entry 750kg with fridge, 17ft long opened, 6 berth
Side entry 1000kg with toilet/washbasin 19ft long opened, 6 berth

They can all have a PVC steel framed awning. We used a porta-potti toilet which we stored outside by day under one of the beds with a skirt around it and brought it inside at night. You could use it in a toilet tent.

I found they work very well and were very comfortable.

Freedom are a range of lightweight caravans all 750 kg loaded. In basic spec with no toilet etc they are OK but when well equipped I think they feel very cramped. Only 10foot long so doesnt leave much room for kit.

I'm sorry Marg, but it is you that is wrong. The weights I quoted come from the Plate on the vehicle bulkhead and the V5, as is confirmed on Land Rover documentation. The unladen weight of the vehicle as it left the factory is 2100kg, the maximum authorised mass of the vehicle is 3500kg. The maximum gross train weight of the vehicle is 7500kg.

The regulations on the government website are clear and I will quote them:

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can:

A. Drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
B. Tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

The wording explicitly states maximum authorised mass. These are the weights that are stamped on the VIN plate on the vehicle and the manufacturer plate on the trailer. It doesn't matter what the vehicle and trailer actually weigh. This means that the heaviest trailer you can tow with my Land Rover without B+E category on your licence is 750kg.

I wonder if it's possible to re-plate the vehicle to a lower MAM. No physical change required just changing the weight plate. Of course you would then have to be careful not to overload it above the new weight.

Not an option for me. The reason I bought the 130 pickup is because of its GVW which allows for a 1000kg load to be carried. A 1000kg euro pallet of sand, cement, or whatever I need to carry fits perfectly in the load bed.
