I watched a lot of reports, including Honest John's before we went for the Duster.

We are now doing the same on the Sandero, with the idea of buying the smaller Dacia for the wife.
However it does have restricted leg room in the back so we will maybe not go for this one.

But for a second car, we will certainly be looking at the Dacia Range.
We like the no frills and only paying out for accessories that we actually want.

The comparison with reliability compared to high end cars is perhaps a bit unfair as a great deal of the issues (though granted not all) with the high end cars are the complex electronics which the Dacia does not have. Though a mid spec Duster DCi would be a fantastic workhorse. The white only pasic model is a bit too basic for me.
I drove a 900cc Sandero Stepway up the hill at Goodwood & it was a good fun drive (I do have a soft spot for the sound of 3 cyl engines though). My time was quicker than in the 200 ps Renaultsport Clio!!! The Dacia being much less conspicuous did help.

It makes me smile how motoring journalists always bang on about the cheapest & most basic Dacias as if it is fantastic that a car is so cheap.

It shows these well paid Audi/Beemer driving hacks don't live in real motoring world. Buyers don't want basic cars now, they want all the toys, even Fiestas etc, are not basic anymore & I would say the attraction of Dacias to most of those who actually consider buying one is that the fully equipped top end models are still far cheaper than anything similar so it is the better equipped Dacias that UK buyers will go for, not the basic ones.

Give it a few years and they won't be so cheap any more. Hyundai was perceived as cheap and cheerful some years ago but when we bought my wife's Getz that was the wrong side of £10k for a mid-spec model. Same with Skodas - years ago they were cheap (and cr*p) and cheerful. My Superb is a £29k car and the wife's Fabia is nearly £15k at today's prices. Admittedly they both have lots of toys as Jack+Jon mentioned.

I have to laugh at the depreciation figures shown in most motoring magazines. Maybe it's just me but I buy the car I want not the car that the next person will pay most for.

I don't think depreciation is a consideration anymore when choosing a car, everything depreciates massively & the more you pay the bigger the hit, forecourt prices for used cars might be high but trade in prices are rubbish. Changing cars every 2-3yrs is a luxury that private buyers have to pay through the nose for.

The way forward appears to be long warranties & keeping the car 7-8yrs.

All the cars I have bought in the past have been second hand.

I have taken over cars that were bought, new, by some else who wanted specific additions and accessories.
Even nearly new cars that were designed by people, sitting in drawing offices, who had little concept of the practicalities of the "additions" that they were putting into their designs just to entice future owners.

The Dacia, for me, is not only my first new car, but it is a car where I decide what additions I want and where I am only paying for what I want.

Yes, the Basic Dacia is pretty basic, but at least you get the choice paying only for the extra bits that you want from a car.

My Dacia is the Ambiance. It does not have electric rear windows because travelling as we do with two dogs in the back seat, electric rear windows are downright dangerous.
It does not have air conditioning. I live in Scotland and the last thing I need is bloomin' air conditioning.

It does have many extras that I considered essential for what I wanted from a car and I was quite prepared to pay the extra for.

Whether it drops in value in the future is not one of my concerns. What I need is a vehicle that is comfortable and reliable and will do the jobs I require of it.

It has already done some of these jobs and the coming winter will test it on the other tasks but so far it has passed all tasks with flying colours.

So much so that our next car will also be a Dacia. Not the Duster because we already have one and with its 7 year warranty, I expect it to last for quite a while yet.
But something from their other models. Basic, but with extras.

Hey Lobey, I'm considering this car. Either the Duster or the Stepway, not sure which. I'm away for a look tomorrow, but thought I'd find out if you were still keen on this car after a few months have passed by.

Hard to see the point of the Stepway, its just a Sandero with raised suspension to look like an suv, if you are considering it you might as well pay less for the Sandero.

My wife has a duster. It is a bit plasticky inside but pretty comfy. I am now considering a Logan...same diesel engine but with cruise control and a massive boot. The Volvo s40 has hit 275000 km and needs the swirl valve done and anti skid sensors. It has been a great car but something simpler would fit the bill.

I am very pleased with the Duster and I bought it to tow our 4 berth caravan which it does like a dream.

I have a couple of niggly problems that were caused by the British Components Firm that added the extras I bought with the car, but my Dacia Dealer is sorting these out for me.

Apart from that, the car is A1 and for the price, I cannot fault it in any way.
If others find it "a bit plasticy" well what do you expect? The nearest equivalently priced car in the same class is another £10,000.
If I have any complaint about the Duster, it is a lack of pockets and storage places in the front area.

There is a good Dacia Forum for those that want a more in-depth view from Owners.

The Duster is the first new car I have ever owned although, over the years I have driven many different vehicles including a number of 4X4's and the only one I would fancy more than the Duster is a Landrover 101, but at 15mpg, it is hardly the world's most economical vehicle.

The wife's duster has a centre armrest storage thingy and a ceiling cubby. It has more storage in the front than my Volvo. The centre armrest was an extra. It gets in the way in town sometimes but folds up out of the way if needs be.

Hi Ewen, I have the central arm rest thingy but the top cubby is no longer available.

I'm afraid I am used to the masses of storage cubbies that the Scenic had and so I am at a loss where to store all my extras in the Duster.
But this is a small complaint compared to the rest of the car.

AS Honest John says, for the money, there is nothing to match it.

Oh and I have taken out the 7 year warranty option so I intend to be using it for a while.

Hi Lobey, Wife has had the duster for 5 months and has already put 10000 miles on it with no complaint from the car or her. No rattles or broken bits.
I reckon on getting the Logan in the autumn for long term high mileage use. If it is the same build quality as the duster, I'll be well chuffed.

Hi Ewen, I am not sure where the Logan is made. I know the Duster is made in India, but I suspect the Logan may be made in Romania.
Not that it makes any difference, but just wondered.

I have not quite yet hit the 3,000 miles yet, but we are both retired and the Duster, while primarily bought as a tow car, it has come into its own handling our B class roads during the present appalling weather we have had.
It has been out in weather where normally I would not have ventured out and yet I have felt quite safe and secure in the knowledge that if needed, I always had the 4x4 option should I require it.
I have yet to see it handle snow, but that will come no doubt.
