Thanks Rob, Tina and RogerGoff, Roger i like what your saying and might be a good way of arguing the toss if i carnt find out the info i'm looking for. My main argument is the same thing Andy mentions on page 1 (I have a Grand Scenic 1.9 diesel, and although the quoted maximum tow weight is 1300 Kg, the issue is the Gross Train Weight (i.e. total weight of car + caravan + contents of both including passengers).
Your weights may be slightly different, but for my 1.9 Grand Scenic, the car weighs 1530Kg and the GTW is 3050Kg. So with your van, your total weight of car + van is 2830. This gives you only 220Kg for all your passengers (inc driver) and any additional car contents (bikes, spare tyres?), which is not much.
We bought a Bailey Ranger 470/4 which is 967Kg unladen, so we would keep well within this Gross Train Weight figure. I calculated on a spreadsheet that we'd need a van of unladen weight under 1000Kg in order to be able to accommodate luggage, contents etc within the weight limits. Note that is illegal to exceed teh Gross Train Weight, and your insurance would be invalid in an accident, and possibly the car warranty also invalidated as a result.
To confuse it further, the Renault manual says that the 1300 figure is for the car with driver only, and that in "all other situations" (i.e. with passengers) the maximum tow is 850Kg. I have a letter from Renault which confirms that this is not the case as long as you don;t exceed the Gross Train Weight.
Performance wise, we had our first trip out this weekend - and I was very impressed with the rowing capabilities - good power, 25mpg, and rock steady. However, I would wonder whether the 1,5 engine is a little underpowered, especially if you're going for a heavier van.
------------- I like it shaken not stirred a little like my caravan.
