What happens if you buy a car and you did'nt know it was chipped?ie if you crashed it and the insurance becomes void    can you tell if it has been chipped?and thanks for all the feed back.

thing is here folks that we are looking at mods for totally different reasons to the racing mob they need power at high revs and for more speed we dont. being old school I would rather check out the possibilities of traditional tuning like free flow air filters and exhausts, I know in the old days a K&N mated to a janspeed exhaust would give 10% by helping the engine breathe better, ditto for polishing the ports on the head (s) plus with on most cars the wrong wheels are driven (front) and as we have the weight dragging on the rear that extra power is wasted if you wheelspin

reckon it is back to plodding away

When I had my Kia sedona I was speaking with my Kia Dealer and they had a Genuine KIA chip that increased BHP from 142 to 180, the chip cost £400 and I was advised this wouldn't invalidate the warranty if it was fitted by a KIA dealer and it wouldn't add any stress to the engine.

With reference to Megabyte's post, and to underline what I've said previously in this thread, I bought my Sorento after driving a Sorento demo which had been chipped by my dealer!! After doing 1000 miles to settle the engine, I then got the same modification done by the same company.

And with reference to Alan's post, he's perfectly correct in saying that here we're talking about mature responsible adults increasing the output of their engines by maybe 30%, NOT boy racers messing about with their 'souped-up' GTIs.

The situation with many insurance companies is exactly because they fail to differentiate between the two groups, and lump everybody in with the boy racers!

I'm gonna guess rechipping a turbodiesel involves increasing the turbo boost- I notice manufacturers produce the same model car with the same size engine in different power outputs at different prices-I'm guessing it costs no more to produce the same engine with any power output so the higer price charged for the higher power is just marketing--or am I wrong--?--

I notice there is no mention of upgrading the intercooler.  Would this be worth doing as well as chipping on turbodiesels.  On petrol engines before chipping it was the camshaft that dictated engine characteristics as wel as carburretor and exhaust upgrades.   I would think it is probably a better idea if changing motor to get one with suffient power in standard spec.
