Oh yes, it's very easy to tow a caravan! Its doing it without hitting anything which is a bit tricky!!
Mr Ulti-mates was scared witless at the prospect of towing a caravan. In fact, we bought one and he wasn't brave enough to tow it home! Instead, we had to get my parents (experienced vanners) to fetch it for us from Lincolnshire.
However, he soon took very warily to the roads and although at first it was definitely a white-knuckle sort of experience, he gradually found it easier and less stressful. Unfortunately for Mr U-M, our first caravan storage was down 50 yards of bendy lane, with high stone walls and only inches to spare each side of the van. The neighbours used to put out their hanging baskets and wheelie bins deliberately to make it even more of an obstacle course!
He did also invest about £75 for one of the Caravan Club's manoeuvring courses and that added to his confidence enormously, even though it doesn't focus on road towing. In fact, I have to say he is now brilliant at reversing the van right onto the exact spot within a pitch (and without spoiling the grass for everyone else with tyre tracks).
We're towing to France this year, which is a measure of how the confidence grows from those early days. Not much troubles Mr U-M these days when he's towing, unless its a small market town (on market day) with a dustbin lorry and a bus to squeeze between! I'd go so far as to suggest he even enjoys towing.
- and you can hire caravans, although this might not be cheap if you don't already have a towbar fitted - and you would feel rather committed to buying a van if this is the case.
