Thanks for your help on this. The only thing now that concerns me is fuel consumption while towing as i get about 34mpg out of the Mondeo diesel.

I have recently traded in my 2004 2.2 dci  x-trail which had 56,000 miles on the clock. Generally the car performed well with the following exceptions, all of which occurred in the 4th year of ownership (except cd player):

faulty turbo intercooler

faulty fuel pump

rust in the wheel arch (twice)

naff cd player where cds would not play in the morning, probably due to humidity.

Apart from the above I found the car to be a good alround car but would not use it for towing a twin axle, couldn't find any Bailey twin axle vans that it could tow safely due to the weights.

Basically got fed up with the problems in the last year and having to return to the dealer each time so decided to have a change.

Specs (inc. weights) for all nissan cars can be found on their web site, here's a link for the latest x-trail http://www.nissan.co.uk/NMGB/en_GB/site-media/vehicles/4x4/T31/grades-and-specs/specs.pdf

If you do chose to buy one I would go with the advice of Neil & Lena and take out the extended warranty, I did and it paid for itself.

We already have a Mondeo estate 2.2 diesel, which is great but we do have to be careful with our loading as the caravan has an mtplm of 1480kg. I am considering a tow car for myself as well. Would the X trail Diesel be better than another Mondeo? I am thinking of an 06/07 model. Any opinions would be appreciated.

The mondeo has a kerbweight of about 1580kg, the Xtrail has a kerbweight of 1525kg, it strikes me that you would have to be even more careful loading the Xtrail. I know from experience just how stable a platform the Mondeo towing a caravan loaded to level of your caravan, mine is very similar, so I would doubt that you would gain anything by making the change.

your wrong about the kerbweight and the 2.2dci weighs in at 1640 kgs with 90% full tank of diesel

I merely quoted the published kerbweight as it is on another web site. It is not usually a place where there is wrong information but if you say it is wrong in this case then fair enough. It could be that it is quoting the unladen mass of the vehicle which is the figure that the law is required to take into consideration for someone with a licnece dated post 1997, this figure does not include a driver nor does it include any fuel.

Bill

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

I now am  a bit concerned about buying an X trail as everyone seems to imply they have problems and to take out the extra warranty. I do like them though. Think i will ponder on this for a while. Trouble is I drive a Mini and my son wants to buy it off me asap. Thanks again for all the input.

The S-Max will give you the weight and space you need for about the same price with roughly the same MPG.

Get an impartial view from the AA or the RAC if your at all concerned or speak to nissan and express your concerns there are many on the road i think you will find that only a small percentage have problems and they do not attract the high VED rates that some 4 wheel drives will

Hi,

I have driven a 140 ps 2ltr tdci S-max since November. It is certainly less of a "gentleman's carriage" than the new Mondeo but does perform very well.

We like the space, weight (1750 kerb) and the ride height.

In mixed solo driving I get a genuine 47mpg, towing the 1540kg Challenger it drops to about 30.

When towing it seems under less pressure than the Mondy.

Mr U-M
