Thanks Caz, I was wondering how to summon the cavalry lol!

No probs Tim, license categories and weight ratios are a minefield for sure, how anybody ever ends up towing the right outfit is beyond me lol.

I used to have a TD4 Freelander and towed a 1500Kg van with it.

The car was too underpowered for easy towing at that weight - let alone with an 1800Kg van on the back.

The Freelander (especially Freelander 2) should be ok to tow some of the lighter twin axle vans like the Bailey rangers, but other than that could be a problem.

We looked at a few smaller 4 x 4s ( Honda CRV, VW Tiguan etc.)

The manufacturers give a 2 tonne limit, which is heavier than the car!  OK for us as our Pageant is max 1400 Kg so within the 85% guidelines.

We had a Frontera before  which is just under 2 tonne, now have the Sorento which can tow virtually any van!!! I prefer having the heavier towcar  for safety!

Suggest a Discovery or Kia Sorento, both of which are great for towing our Conquereor (1865 kg mtplm).

Good luck

To be honest i would not touch one with a barge pole. I know 5 people who have had them & they have had nothing but trouble with them. problems like. air flow meters/fuel pumps/clutch/middle differensial/fly wheels shearing off. these are not cheap things too fix. 4 of the 5 were TD4. If you have a deeeeep pocket get one & goooood luck.

We have a new Freelander 2 and after a lot of extensive research bought a twin axle van despite some comments on here which offered inccurate info.

We have just done 1500 miles in France towing at 86% (1940kg kerbweight car empty + full tank with van loaded to laden weight of around 1660kg) - both van and car weights verified by weighbridge. The LR towed fantastic at 60mph for up to 10 hours at a time including stops and not a twitch despite being passed by coaches at 80mph etc. Had to hold it back most of the time from creeping up to 65/70. Returned 23mpg with 3 bikes on the roof and 5 passengers with all luggage etc.

Had a discovery TD5 auto before which I felt did not have the same ability as the freelander 2 other than space.

I think the original post was refering to Freelander 1 which has a lower kerbweight than the Mk 2 model also its ability to tow 1800kgs safely which would be over the 100 %  which is not advisable

I had a Freelander TD4 and towed a twin axle Sterling Europa 600. To be honest the car towed this van very well. The kerbweight of the Freelander is 1668kg and the unladen weight of the van is 1334kg which gives a 80% match. ( This is a light van compared with say a Bailey Senator Carolina, which is a similar van) Having said that, if you load the van up with 200kg of personal effects the match worsens to 92% which, subject to your driving licence could be legal but you would be entering the territory where it would be difficult in hill start situations and would start to become unstable. I've now changed my vehicle!

We had a Freelander off "the" road vehicle!!

Only towed a TT and the two times we used it for that it broke and cost us over £1000 (each time)to put right.
