I love auto's for towing, and you have the option of the gear change if you need. I would go for a Disco, but they are not good on fuel consumption. Not a real problem for us. We tend to keep the Disco for towing and as a second car. We use a small Ka the rest ofthe time wich adequately gets us from A to B.
we have towed with manual and auto,we have auto now and would not go back to manual as auto makes towing so much easier although it is personal choice.
We bought a Nissan X Trail Automatic earlier this year and have used it as our two car. We are now changing vans and have realised it is not considered up to towing anything above a weight of 1300 so basically it shouldn't be towing any caravan! The manual version would be OK but we like automatics like many others here.
So we are trading it back in for a Nissan Pathfinder Aventura automatic which it appears will tow up to a weight of 3000 - unless someone knows better.
If the new Superb auto version is DSG, it is an unfaultable piece of engineeering.
I'm not sure I can agree with you on this. I've got a VW Touran 140 DSG, and at 35K mls., have just had my gearbox and dual mass flywheel replaced, at a cost of £4,000+. Done out of warranty (three months), and VW coughed up 70%, with extended warranty covering the remainder. I would strongly advise anyone who has a VAG car with the DSG to take out the extended warranty once the dealer warranty has expired. As for towing, it's brilliant, but I have my reservations as to whether or not it's really up to the job.

Why not? Not all caravans are leviathans weighing in at more than 1300 Kgs.
