When I bought my Golf estate in 2001, it already had 46,000 miles on the clock.  I towed our caravan with it for about 4 years and then sold it (to family member)  in 2005, and it had then done 86,000 miles.

The car finally required a new clutch last year, at 11-years old, with over 120,000 miles on the clock.  We have a mover, so this considerably reduces clutch wear.  Subject to proper maintenance and sensible driving, including avoidance of overweight, towing should not adversely affect the value/mechanical condition of the car.

Our last car had the towbar and electrics fitted by the dealership.  When I sold it at 4 years old, the dealer offered me a trade-in figure that did not penalise the fitting of the towbar although, again, it was snapped up by another family member.

So I would just say that, with or without a towbar fitted, the best approach is to do a thorough check of the vehicle, or have it done for you.

Bertie.

Why ever not kabbes?According to a previous post of yours you encouraged a bloke with a 1.4 t reg astra to tow a caravan of nearly a ton and said it wouldnt ever damage the car or wear the engine.Hmmm

Towing within a cars' limits will not put undue stress on a car provided it is driven correctly, if however you have no knowledge of the cars' history, obviously a fitted towbar is evidence of potential extra abuse of the vehicle.

There must be some truth in this as dealers generally remove towbars before sale & used car buyers guides suggest that buyers check for evidence of towbar removal when inspecting a car they might wish to buy.

Possibly the op's question is not specific enough, it depends on the car, if the car is a couple of yrs old with low mileage & service history then having a towbar if one is required would be an advantage. With an older car it would be just one more possible sign of potential abuse.

I can't really see how there could be a definitive answer to the op's question as it stands.

I don't see that a car that has towed is more likely to be abused than any other car. If anything, the opposite could be said. People that tow are generally people with families or older people. You don't see many "boy racers" towing caravans and the cars I would most want to avoid are the ones they have owned. These are guaranteed to have had a thrashing. There are a lot of tell tale signs to look for to see if a car has had a hard life and a towbar comes in close to the bottom of that list. One of the first things I would look at is the stereo. if that has been changed or looks like it has had someone probing about with it then it is often a sign that someone has had a different stereo, also look for signs of extra wires that could have been used for additional speakers and amplifiers. This is a very good tell tale left by the "boy racer" types.
