Freelander, towing, PETROL.... ho ho ho.   Even though I'd advocate buying British, the 1.8l Freelander engine is an embarrasement to British Engineering.  It all started with a cheap cylinder head gasket - it blew at 60,000 miles, the engine overheated and the cylinder head warped. Because the head bolts run right down into the crankcase it meant a complete engine strip and rebuild. About £2000 at a dealer.....
Sorry my last post was in reply to this !

Manufacturing

Land Rovers were manufactured primarily at the Solihull plant, near Birmingham, but production of the "Freelander" (2) was moved to the Jaguar car factory at Halewood near Liverpool, a former Ford car plant. Defender models are assembled under license in several locations worldwide, including Spain (Santana Motors), Iran (Pazhan Morattab), Brazil (Karmann)and Turkey (Otokar).[17] The former BL/Rover Group technical centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire is home to the corporate and R&D headquarters.

So lets be honest its not really suitable for tugging big heavy twin axle caravans !

Don't know where your info came from but according to the handbook supplied with my vehicle its kerbweight with a full tank of fuel is 1712 kgs with a noseweight limit of 120kgs making it an 87% match with my twin axle caravan.

I would hope my handbook is right.

You need to read more carefully Al. My post actuallly said "I thought" (Landrovers were no longer made in Britain) so no "false information" at all. I was far from sure so did not actually claim to know

Thank you for the information. If it's all correct then it looks like some Landrovers are still made in Britain, but some are not.

It's also true that the term `assembled' is of course not an indication of where the parts being assembled were actually manafactured.

Thanks for the info but don't accuse me of supplying "false information" - that was a `false accusation'.

hi, owned a freelander td4 - 5 door 2005 model for 3 years and used it to tow an eldiss 534.

we had no problems apart from a hose on the engine that split and caused loads of smoke but cost just £6 to replace.

the four wheel drive joints can cause problems on these cars so insisit on a test drive and listed for any noise / cluncking from the rear of the car.

loads of these around, look for a se or a hse model. mpg from ours was approx 30 - 35mpg when towing.

All LAND ROVERS are made in Britain, most still in Solihull, except the Freelander, which is built at Halewood. Some CKD kits are sent abroad to be built there.

I am on my second Freelander and have covered well over 100k miles with few problems. I first had the older L series diesel, which will go on for ever if regularly serviced, and now have the newer Td4 BMW engined model. Do not buy a petrol as you risk having the head gasket go, but the diesels in general are good. There can be problems with the dfive system, but with the introduction of the Td4 they altered the drive ratios slightly and this has resulted in fewer problems. Like any 8 year old car you can get problems, but one with a service history is always a help.
They tow well. I have towed 2 tonnes for a short distance and was surprised how well it coped, but with our little van it is very easy to forget it is there!!

If you want good advice i can recommend both the Freelander Owners Club
http://www.freelanderclub.org/
and the Freelander section of this Forum
http://forum.landrovernet.com/forum.php?
Some of the other LR Forums still treat us as a bit of a joke.

Hi all,

Re a Freelander for towing a caravan, I've been towing with one since just after the range was introduced and would recommend the diesel version. Think we're now on our fourth Freelander - Freelander 2.

Regards the kerbweight, the weights posted on the website mentioned earlier in this thread are either incorrect or misleading. They may be the weight of the entry level model with little or no "extra" kit. My current, and previous vehicle, has a kebweight of well over 1900kg according to it's V5 - something like 1945kg. The handbook quotes a figure of from 1640kg, but agian that depends on exactly what is fitted to that particular model

The freel2.com forum is quite good for info

Stay away from the 1.8. Honda derived with alloy block & head. Steel head gasket goes bad however if it's been done with the revised gasket they are ok. Td4 diesel is a BMW engine so reliable.
I have the 2.5 v6. Powerful but fairly juicy. Their a bit like markings. You either love em or hate em

B in law tows with 06 auto and loves it. Capable motor and no issues. I have the 07 2.2 Diesel. Very good tow car and only issue was clutch with could go on any vehicle. You can search anywhere on the Internet and find horror stories relating to any vehicle. On thing I would recommend is to buy one with good service history.

Blimey is it 2010 again?

1.8 Honda derived?? Honda will string you up and torture you for comments like that.

Rover Group designed. When Honda were to stop supplying engines to Rover.

I wouldn't....

FIL's had two FL 1's, and they were BOTH £$%^&*( !!!!

Everyone I've spoken to have said you're just buying the badge not the build quality.

There's better tow-ers out there for same £££.

Damned if I do...
