I wrote a program a year or two ago to keep track of mpg. It had the option of selecting solo / towing / urban / motorway and recorded a maximum, minimum, overall average and average on the last fill. It also kept a reminder of the tax, mot and insurance dates. Also if you happen to have more than one car, it would record the data for as many cars as you liked as each record was saved by regestration number.
Trip computers tend to be inaccurate for the following reason. Speedometers over-read by anything up to 8 percent or so. Therefore if you stick at 60 mph for 1 hour you may have only travelled 55 miles or so. The trip computer takes its mileage from the speedo so it says for example that youve used 1.5 gallons to travel 60 miles ( 40mpg) when in fact youve travelled 55 miles using 1.5 gallons or 36.6 mpg. Check out your speedo with a good sat nav and you`ll see.
My Vectra CDTi says its doing 82mph on the French motorway system ( where you can put the cruise control on for long periods unlike here) when the sat nav s saying 75!
Another way to tell is to follow HGVs on the motorway. If they appear to be doing any more than 56mph then your speedo is out.
I used to get quite frustrated when I planned journeys using Autoroute. It always seemed to take longer to get there than it should and I seemed to record many more miles than Autoroute thought it should take. It was only when I checked my speed with a GPS on the motorway that I realised that my Isuzu Trooper was lying to me. It also explained why HGVs seemed to be able to keep up 60mph all day - my speedo was reading about 7% high.
accuracy of car speedos have too many variables, not just the accuracy of the unit itself, but your tyre wear/size/pressure can all change it, if you think about how much the circumference will change between a new tyre and one just about ready to change, that could be 20mm difference
Actually, having said that trip computers aren't much good, mine seems to be turning out pretty accurate - over the last two tanks, it has matched the calculation produced by the Fuelly website...
...which is sort of annoying because when I see it says 17mpg, I know it's telling the truth...
