It's not all doom & gloom for the VAG cars, but agreed research needs to be done. We were about to get an Audi to replace the Rover 45TDi, but were put off a bit by the likely extra expense (depending on year) of need of an uprated cooling fan. Whether this was true or not I didn't fully check, but what really irritated me was the prices being asked for the average A4 estate about the same age & mileage of the Saab we eventually settled on. Prices came out up to a couple of thousand more. We had a dealer supplied (Bosal/Saab) towbar and dedicated electrics and the car was already set up for towing, ie pre-wired, and the dealer made no extra charge for programming the ECU to operate appropriately when a trailer is plugged in. Extra charge (not cheap I'm told) at VAG dealers.
Hope I'm not proved wrong, but so far (approx 10k miles already since I bought it in Feb) the engine, in fact the whole car, has been really nice to drive and tow with.
Sorry - strayed O/T. VAG cars I'm sure are probably no better or worse overall than many others on the market; one hears of horror stories with most makes - luck of the draw I guess.
Best of luck all of you with your VWs & Audis - regular servicing (not necessarily at dealers, but at least with the CORRECT spec oil and at a GOOD indy) should keep 'em going for a long time/mileage.

We shall be trying out our new to us A 6 avant this afternoon with the van on the back. Fingers crosseed all will be ok. On the note of servicing, yes obviously very important and as petemate says not necessarily by dealers. The A6 we have bought is a high miles, one owner, full Audi history car. When i was poking around on it the other day i removed the air filter to see what it was like. Well it was the most blocked [flies, grit ,leaves etc] filter that that i have ever seen on any car.

Horrible and binned! Quite scary bearing in mind that the last major service was only 10k miles ago!  Full independent service coming up soon me thinks.

Yes, the indies are generally very good. If we had gone for an Audi I would have had no reservations; our nearest one is only three and a half miles away, is jointly owned by two of the best ex-VAG mechanics I know (they used to work at the dealer group I was at years ago). They really know their stuff, even on non-VAG products, so the Saab will go there to keep the service book looking nice & stamped-up.
