Thanks for the advice everyone. It has been a long road but decision made and deal done!!
On Saturday we pick up our shiny, silver, main dealer approved used 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD! It really is a lovely car that has been main dealer serviced from new, is pristine inside and almost as good outside. It drives like a dream and has lots of toys too!
All wheels have been reburbed to new and being an assured car the dealer is giving a 12 month parts & labour warranty. We are well impressed.

Kia Sorento 2.5 auto, towed my twin axle for 5 years with no problems at all, normal service and a couple of rubber boots, auto always in the right gear for the conditions, never go back to manual, brill tow car
Funnily enough we are getting rid of our 08 plate Sorento XE in favour of the Jeep... matter of economics really!
helpmybob, I take it you are referring to the old 'gearbox failure at 60k' chestnut that is talked about? This Merc gearbox is good for 200k+ if looked after and fed the correct ATF, however I have already asked for a complete inspection of the gearbox and assurances from what is a very reputable Mercedes and Jeep main dealer. Leaks are a give away of transmission failure and as I will always have warranty cover during my time with the vehicle so I am not unduly worried.
