After working many many years in the motor trade I`ve always used the recomended sticky pads usually in strips of five never ever had a problem with them falling off. Also very easy to remove when required with a little heat from gun or hot water. Better than drilling.
our van has 2 recesses on the panel where the number plate is fixed. ive stuck one number plate as normal with double sided tape to this rear panel but with 2 holes drilled through it along with 2 rubber grommets fixed with captive nuts at one end and they fit into the 2 drilled holes... then screw the other plate onto the bottom plate with 2 screws into the captive nuts.the grommets and screws fit perfectly into the recesses on the vans rear panel ,and we just unscrew and remove the top plate depending on what car we tow with.
the cost of a back rear panel is too high and drilling may crack it,once cracked it can spread.always stuck ours on.halfords sell a green tape for exterior trim fitting at £5 a roll.three strips of this and you can forget it.cheese wire will remove any stuck on plate.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
we all know that double sided tape works well , the post was about using 2 cars for towining and the ease of changing plates , and wether it was wise to screw into the body of a new caravan and invalidating the guarantee , i am quite sure the people who design caravans never actually use them

If "stick on" number plates are so good, why does the MOT insist that number plates are screwed/bolted on?
Nothing in the MOT manual about number plates having to be screwed or bolted on. As long as its readable its a pass.
I have used sticky back velcro for years with no problems. Stick a wide 'H' pattern on the van & each number plate - always worked well for us on vans and various trailer lighting boards.
An added advantage is that the unused plate can then be velcro'd to the carpet in the boot of the relevant car to keep it to hand and stop it sliding around.
